Better benefits too, even if the pay is less.

There is one thing to keep in mind with those jobs however. Typically you are one snowstorm away from being unemployed.

How so , my buddy has a town job and he drives a plow truck or tracked machine doing the towns roads or side walks. biggest problem with his job is one you start out as a contractor and have to wait and apply for full time jobs and two there’s way too much bs drama with management and fellow employees. I couldn’t deal with that . One guy was lazy and drinking on the job but because he was buddies with the boss it took forever to finally fire him

I worked county public works maintenance years ago as an equipment operator. Depending on the crew it was super laid back and pretty enjoyable. Some crews absolutely sucked to do. Mowing in 100 degree heat in an enclosed cab tractor with no AC was the definition of misery.

Other spots like signage or dirt road maintenance were great. It was the definition of a chill, show up, do your work; be paid and left alone while being able to have a life outside of work.

In a less than a decade I'm going to be unbinding myself from the LTL chains and go back to something like that. Get a house paid off, refresh the cars/bikes and live life again and escape the breathless oppression of trucking and LTL.

Also, we've been kinda picking up from the absolute dead winter we've had. LTL sucks that way, I haven't been able to get a set start time since I switched from tankers. Just on call whenever I have hours. And beyond that, I might get called in, then called off 30 minutes later when I'm halfway into work and have to turn around and go home, and wait to be called in again.

There's a reason it pays so well.

Got the offer letter in the mail today. Been a stressful few days contemplating my decision. I’ve been trying to get a municipal job for the past 15 years so I’m gonna go for it. With this job I can be like my dad who retired with a full pension at 58 and he is now 80 still reaping the benefits of a union pension. My dad retired from the CTA and had no help getting me my county job. Thanks for all the positive reply’s. I’ll miss the challenge of backing my 48’ trailer into driveways off county roads lol. I’ll have to get adjusted to backing up tandem axle dump trucks now.

My brother had a county job once. He told me during a snowstorm it’s all hands on deck and calling out will get you fired instantly. He couldn’t even come to my wedding because it snowed that day.

I guess each town/ city has different rules because we’re my buddy works there’s been a few employees do no shows or call in sick . If they did it too much and were contractors they wouldn’t get their contracts renewed for the spring time . Now the Full time guys get away with a lot before they get fired but that also has to do with the employment laws here . You can’t just fire someone with out having to pay a lot of severance over here
