Windsmith I thought the whole idea around dry van versus reefer is you really don't have to do grocery warehouses unless you just want to with a van or maybe you're a glutton for punishment?... Reefer guys, well, it sucks to be them.. You post about one of these a month. You realize you're not going to change their ways, right?.. Just say'n...

It would have been a call to the broker, if not paid for lumper fees it would have went back to the dock that loaded me.

ooo I forgot about the Marshals!

Seriously though, I don't appreciate someone reaching into my pocket - especially when they're not legally entitled.

I don't mind the grocery warehouse shuffle so much. The issue with me is that if someone's willing to pay extra to have the truck unloaded and I feel like doing it myself and pocketing the cash, then I should have that option. I was told that I didn't have that option in this case. The Federal Government says otherwise.

I did get reimbursed later when someone finally answered the phone at the broker's office, but I'd already paid cash so I could get out of there.

From the OP post it sounds like he was delivering to a Maines Paper DC. If that is the case the office person was half right and half wrong. With Maines paper you can lump it yourself with no issue if it under 100 cases. Over that amount there is a packet of paperwork that needs filled out before you are allowed on the dock. This packet has info that the shipper, insurance company, trucking company, and driver all have to fill out. They do this as a way to get around the federal laws. In reality to get the paperwork filled out and returned is a bigger headache than what most companies want to deal with. Also the paperwork is only good for 1 year. Even many of the LTL carriers (ABF, UPS, Conway, and many reefer o/o) don't even bother filling it out...we just charge more going into a Maines Paper due to knowing we will lose at least 1 extra delivery that day
