Hi. New to this forum. Canadian long-haul flatbed trucker. My wife is writing an article on lumper issues especially where Owner operators have to pay even their contract states they don't but the warehouse won't unload until they hire a "fleecer" as I call them. Then they don't get reimbursed. That's why I am on flatbed. Also when a driver wants to load or unload their own delivery (because its quicker and sometimes safer), they are told by the warehouse, they must use the lumper because the warehouse gets a percentage of what the lumper is paid.

Any other horror or funny tales out there?

There are some lumpers, and I use the term loosely, who travel into the Fulton Market area on Fulton Street, in Chicago. I call them lumper leeches, and I do mind being bothered by them and not just a little.

Most of the places won't allow them to work, anymore, but a few places do, and those guys aren't that much fun to deal with, always wanting to wake you up if you are sleeping, and striking a 'deal' to do something and then asking for more, things like that. They aren't too proud to outright beg, either.

We pay other places to do what you describe, and some of us do lump. I do some places, but much of it is on a company account, we just sign for it and it is billed. Many of the meat distributors charge a lumping fee.

Ain't that the truth? Lumping is still used a fair bit up here in Canada?
