Something else to keep an eye out for IF you are looking at an M11, sometimes with a lot of miles the star gear drive on the fuel pressure pump will lose it's teeth, but I am talking a million miles here.

I have a 1996 international with the 350 horse m11 it does a great job it's not the first one to top the hill but it's reliable and definitely a little work horse that gets 7mpg.

took me a minute to grasp this thread I read the title and thought man that's a big pony motor never dreaming something that small for a main power source. Please try to remember the words of Carroll Shelby " there is no replacement for displacement "

Ya I know I want the m11 but all the older trucks with the cummins are ragged out. The truck with the c12 though has a interior I'd eat off of and it's a 97. Decisions decisions. Oh the c-12 in this truck is 430 hp, 4:10 rear and 1.169 mil miles. Yay? Nay?

The small motors have their place, why run a 15L motor when you don't need it? The problem is when people spec a 370hp motor to take 80,000 over the rockies. I have a 425 hp ISM in my Pete that is reg. for 54,000 and normal weigh is around 45,000, at that weight I can run with all the "big boys" and embarrass most of them on the hills, if they are anywhere over 65,000.
I you think the M11 is small I guess you have never driven a Century with a Cat C-10 and a 7 spd box? Yeah, they built a lot of them, ask some of the old CF drivers.
Surely if you been driving for 35 years you have slammed a couple doors on 220's and silver 92's? -
I'm starting to shy away from these two trucks and headed towards a M2. What engine should I look out for in these guys? I see a lot of c-7, isb 6.7 cummins (is that the same engine in the dodges?), and some Mercedes. And still I'll only be hauling around 45k max weight. Thanks for all the info.

You could go the Cummins 8.3 ISC (basically the smaller brother of the ISL, HOWEVER, it just does not have the grunt of the ISL. -
This would probably be a decent little truck for the money, a lot of people shy away rom the merc engine, but for what you are doing it should be fine.
