Dust is dust. Your are going to get a lot more dust a lot faster if there is a cloud of smoke. Every laptop has a fan, that fan pushes air through a tunnel, to keep your components cool. A laptops components are crammed into a small area, and get hot quick. That blanket of dust acts as insulation against the air that's supposed to be flowing through it keeping it all cool. Then to compound the problem, cigarette smoke also comes with a sticky tar coating, making it near impossible to clean.

As for linux, there are hundreds of people out there packaging it all up, and hundreds of different versions to choose from. In my opinion Linux Mint http://linuxmint.com/ and PCLinuxOS http://www.pclinuxos.com/ are both ten times easier to install and use than any version of Windows. If you think Linux is hard, you haven't tried it lately. I ain't no computer guru. I don't like Windows because I don't like spending hours pulling my hair out trying to get my computer to work again, after I click on something with malware , my registry got corrupted, or the latest Windows update failed. I like USING my computer, not fixing it.

I'll have to second you on PCLinuxOS MrMustard....I started with computers when memory was measured in Kb and a hard-drive was not even available yet. This was also before MS Winblows and before Al Gore invented the internet...:biggrin_25523:
Anyway, needless to say, I've owned many PC's and several Mac's (used) over the years and stayed with Winblows mostly because of the price. I changed over to PCLinux in early '05 and haven't looked back....and, no need for a Mac :biggrin_255:

I started out with Ubuntu in 06. I ended up switching to Debian because I don't like the way Ubuntu comes out with a new version every six months. I prefer a rolling release that leaves me alone for a few years. I hadn't tried PCLinuxOS until about a month ago when I couldn't get Linux Mint 9 to run on my wife's computer and tried PCLinuxOS gnome on it instead. Everything worked out of the box. I was impressed. It's pretty easy to use as well.

PCLinuxOS is indeed a decent distro. Personally, I prefer something more simple and which allows me much finer system control, which is why I use Slackware, but anyone wishing to try out Linux for the first time could do a lot worse than PCLinuxOS.

If you are new to Linux, Linux Mint is the way to go. Mint is a version of Ubuntu made easier for beginners.

    http://linuxmint.com/download.php

The Live CD doesn't have Java installed, the Live DVD does. Flash and dvd playback will work out of the box on either.

And there is PcLinuxOS, that's a great one for beginners as well.

If you have a wireless aircard, Mint is the way to go, their software supports them much better.
