My ears are ringing looking at that v-8 cat. Ive got an old Deere 7520 8 wheeler tore apart next to the wood stove in the shed. Spun a main bearing 4 years ago? Can't even remember for sure anymore. Only way to drop the oil pan was to jack the front end up 2' and pull the front axle. Turned out the crank is shot. Hate to scrap it but the parts to get it right will be multiple times what it's worth. It has the same 531 as a 6030 Deere so not much chance of finding a good drop in engine. Going to be a half day project just to get the axle under it again to move it.
I keep hoping to find a good 6030 with a bad engine. Rebuild mine an drop it in. The day after I get rid of it one will turn up.johndeere4020 and MJ1657 Thank this. -
I live right by a lake. My neighbor used to have a big house boat on the Mississippi. He built a trailer and hauled it home. We decided to dump it in our lake so he could cruise it around. We borrowed a 7520 from a neighbor to back it in. I got elected to drive it to back the trailer in the lake. There is a hole at the landing from guys power loading boats. When I hit that the engine fan was spraying water all over me. Good times.
johndeere4020 and Old Iron Thank this. -
Mines got the same 8 speed synrco main trannie as a 4020. There is a extra high/low splitter on the right side for a total of 16. The splitter is actually an overdrive so in road gear that thing goes way to fast. With wore out hinge pins she is a hand full. But it is fun to pull out and pass your neighbors new stuff going down the road.johndeere4020 and MJ1657 Thank this.

And a 3208 Cat? Well that might even be old enough to be the earlier 1170 (I think that's what they called them). Hard to believe they could push that thing along.......MJ1657 Thanks this.

I wonder how hard it would be to put a 466 in it?Last edited: Jan 31, 2016

I didn't look at it close enough to see what it is.

Get enough cabin fever in the winter anything could be possible. A neighbor built his own snowplow tractor. Started out as a early 70s Chevy 2 wheel drive. Chopped the frame behind the cab and added a frame with a big upward arch to it. Mounted an axle out of a old school bus. Build his own rim adapters do mount up to the dayton spokes. He had to rig up 2 trannies back to back to get it geared down enough with the big tractor tires. I think it was a 4 and a 5 speed. With both box's in reverse its actually a forward gear. So a 21 speed tractor truck.MJ1657 and johndeere4020 Thank this.

I'm with ya, I've seen farmers make some pretty neat stuff farm show is my favorite paper because of that. I just hate to see that old girl go to scrap, I know people have put 466's in 4020's I would think you could get one in a 7520 with the amount of room they have. I would think one from a 4640 or 4840 could be had easy enough. If I were closer I would help you out with it.

Seems like anymore a guy runs around putting out the biggest fire with no time to work on the fun stuff.
Promised the kid I would get the 720 two banger diesel up and going so he could pull it this summer. That has been tore apart in the corner of the shed for all of 6 years now. The last year it ran I cultivated a good 300 acres of corn with it. It just seemed like it getting weak. Did all the normal changing filters and what not. Nothing helped. So tore it down with the plan of making a puller out of it. Got the head off and everything looked A ok.
The air filter has a pipe that draws air from behind the radiator. Turns out the friggen mice had the pipe plumb full of soybeans. I don't know how the thing even ran like that. Since its tore apart anyway I figure we might as well just soup it up and see if we can beat the old mans 830.
Always a cold beer around if you ever get up this way.1johnb, dclerici1, johndeere4020 and 1 other person Thank this.
