Macro 12 or GPS? How about when it comes down to it......NEITHER !! Good ol' common sense goes a long way. Looking up and down the road you're about to turn on while waiting for traffic goes a long way. How many times have you turned only to find the dreaded "NO TRUCKS" sign a block down the road? (or "NO THRU TRUCKS"). I use Microsoft Streets/Trips. No sense to waste $400-600 on a GPS for "truckers"....cause i'm told they have a tendancy to goof.
the trucker gps help over the regular by putting you in the correct lanes, avoiding low clearance areas, no thru truck roads, etc but you can never replace common sense. as for the right or left side of the road look for even or odd numbers
i put myself in the right lanes to begin with. And i'm always looking down the road a half mile to a mile to see if the lane i'm in happens to be an 'exit only' lane. Paying attention to signs is fairly important. your GPS should never be telling you where to go......you should already have an idea....
I love Microsoft Streets & Trips, wont use anything else for a GPS. That combined with the directions (to customer) on file, cross reference with the Atlas one in awhile. The only time i've ever gotten in a jam has been my own fault. Would love to see a truckers version of the S&T software.
I've used 2009 and 2010 versions. My GPS unit itself went to crap on me, so i went out and just bought a whole new program. what i like most about the 2010 version is that say you set the waypoints for start and finish, but it dont take you thru the route you know you need to go or want to match it up with directions and/or fuel route....is you can click and drag the route over to the street you want to amend it to, and it'll automaticly refresh with the updated route you want. kinda slick mesa thinks.
Seems like the 12 is getting 'enhanced' with some 23 info. Just did a 12 & 23, the 12 gave the canned dry goods but then had the extra 23 ' go to the west entrance dock 100-110' Maybe someone's going through and merging the two
So far I use GPS ( only to get a general idea of what area of town I am going to 23 ( Yea they just brought it back for a little while) Atlas Swift terminals to see if maybe other drivers have been where I am going Google Earth I had Microsoft street and trips but don't know where the heck I put it. have you guys seen this for streets and trips? http://www.laptopgpsworld.com/2595-poi-mega-file-pushpin-collections-truckers-rvers-other-travelers
again....typical swift. why not just leave it alone? i understand the whole 'new qualcomm' thing, but really, you're spending the time AND MONEY to do away with the mac 23. now you're spending the time AND MO MONEY to pay someone to go thru the zillion or so macro's and merge them??? No wonder.....
Exactly, that's the best feature. That, and the fact you can see on the map every highway, street, and turn that you will be travelling and can have your entire trip planned within minutes. Instead of the GPS telling you where to go, you tell IT where you want it to take you. I've contacted Microsoft in the past to suggest a Trucker version of this software, they replied but refered me to their customer service dept. I'd like to see a version of it specifically for drivers, including things like: Truck stops, rest areas, scale houses, low clearance bridges, truck routes etc. I recommend this program to all drivers. For the price of one of the trucker gps units, you can buy a new laptop, and the S&T software for the same price.
