If your tires have enough traction to smoke your brakes then certainly you could use your jake

I say it again. You can come off a mountain 1000 times to slow, but only once too fast.

when i first started, i tried to downshift going down hill, missed the gear and wound up going down Out of gear

you do that once, you NEVER do it again

I have heard someone sometimes does this drag racing my fellow company drivers. Heaviest wins.

i have ALWAYS used my jake in the ice and snow. i also never lock my differentials

it lets me know what is grabbing, what isnt

the only time i have ever seen the side of my trailer is getting off an exit ramp, downhill, traffic light at the bottom, on ice and snow, that had not been plowed at 2mph only the curb kept the trailer from going around

it was 2am in a snowstorm, no one else was around as i slid thru the intersection

Listen to Otter he explained it perfect. everybody here has the same point though. Just like has been said too slow many times too fast once. That road has claimed many a trucker

Too many companies say don't use jake when wet for traction, what the mean is "we are cheap ###-holes so don't use jake all the time cause it costs us 1-2% in fuel over coasting in gear"

you can almost always run the jake on ice and snow, if you have slippage turn the jake setting down. Worst case is losing traction and starting to jackknife and in that instance the old saying "when in doubt mat it out" comes into play. Groomed at ski mountains part time and that's the solution there was when it happened (10-15 times a night) your going down hill and lose traction which means you lose the ability to steer just like in a semi BUT if you hit the gas and give it all it has HOPEFULLY if you left a cushion by going slow to begin with you can regain traction.....

If you are going too fast and driving irresponsiblely to begin with there is no solution just don't be a idiot and kill a family take the ditch so you only hurt yourself. Finding a new job or replacing a truck will be way easier than a 10-20 year manslaughter sentence and living with that past for most I would assume

Here's another saying to think about...You can always speed up,,,butcha can't always slow down!

Do yer gear-grabbing and slow down at the top before ya start down. Roll off gently and speed up if needed as ya go.

It's not only companies directing not to use the jake in those conditions, it's the CDL manuals and trucking schools.
