I just went online and paid $300 for my MC#....problem is...I think I selected the wrong carrier description. I put "motor contract carrier of property (except household goods).....instead of "motor common carrier of property ( except household goods).

Is this fixable? I paid it a few hours ago.....I'll also call in the morning.

I think you did it right. Contract is what you need, not Common

In my experience (and I'm not an O/O but I hauled for one, for many years...) a 'CONTRACT' carrier means you haul for 'specific, contracted' customers; (which we did...) and a 'COMMON' carrier means .. you may perhaps lease on to Landstar or some such.

Because we hauled for a dedicated (Shelly Company) asphalt gig, we (he) had 'Contract' MC filing.

Don't know if this helps, but a bit I learned when I thought about buying the fleet when he sold out.

Common Carriers are required to publish rates. Most LTL Carriers are Common Carriers. This allows them to make pick ups and delivery’s without making a contract each time. Unless you’re hauling some special Freight, and The Shipper requires Common Carrier Authority, very rare, all you need is Contract Authority. No Authority is needed to Lease onto someone else’s Authority, like Landstar. Contract Authority would be needed to book a Load with their Brokers, though.

So in essence, the O/P's choice was correct? Thanks for clarification; for myself as well. I'm always up to learning, for sure~!

(The day I don't learn at LEAST one thing... is the day I better get'a'building on that Pine Box.)

Lol, My facts are probably off a bit, but generally speaking, I’m sure all he needs is Contract I agree, learn something everyday..

As long as your authority is active...... the rest is irrelevant.....

That's correct. Why there's still a choice to check off is beyond me, just confuses folks. The "Common vs contract carrier" is from the holdover days when common carrier rates needed to be published. That is no longer the case, "for hire" is for hire, whether common or contract is irrelevant now...
