As far as I've found so far, the only way to change it to common would be to reapply for new authority..
I too accidentally chose contract because I didn't see why I'd need to publish rates..? It really is all irrelevant for the most part nowadays. For hire, is for hire..
The only problem I've run into is in FL, a common carrier can file & get a tax exempt paper they can bring down to the parts house. That way any truck trailer parts you buy in FL, you don't have to pay the tax on in up front. As a contract carrier, I'm not eligible for it..
I figured it all comes out in the wash, as I get is as a deduction when I file taxes..?
Made mistake on FMCSA registration

I'll give it a shot again. That's why I said problem I've had. Rereading my post, I guess I should not have said ineligible as a contract carrier. The form does state Common carrier though. Usually try my best not to spread inaccurate information..

It seems like the options “common carrier” and “contract carrier” will become obsolete at some point.
“FMCSA's legacy systems such as L&I incorporated those earlier definitions, so applicants had to choose one of them. It is only in via Phase 2 of the Unified Registration System (URS) that it will be possible to completely eliminate them, when the legacy systems are retired. Nevertheless, whether a carrier has applied for common or contract carrier authority, FMCSA makes no distinction between them.”
I have common carrier authority. How can I change it to/add contract carrier authority (or vice versa)?G13Tomcat Thanks this. -
