What I do when tuning my Wilson 1000, is I find a good spot away from metal poles, buildings, trees, etc. I get out place the magnet base dead center of the vehicle's roof, drop the whip all the way down, and then take an SWR check on channels 1, 20 and 40.

If the SWR is higher on 1 than 40, I bring the whip up a little bit, tighten down the set screws just enough to keep it from dropping, then take another reading.

If the SWR is higher on 40 than it is 1, then drop the antenna back down some. I keep doing this until I get the readings on 1, 20 and 40 pretty close....then I finish torquing the set screws and call it a day.

Also make sure you shut the doors before taking a reading.

Got good rx/tx and SWR with a K40 tonight I borrowed from the father-in-law.

Might just have to pick one up instead of a Wilson just based on the fact that I know how well it worked for me!

Thanks again for everyones input, you fellas are a great service!

k40s work good. I don't think they are built as rugged as the Wison.........at least the older Wilsons.

Between the 2 i would go with a Wilson 5000 magnetic.
I have one on my Chevy Tahoe and it works really well and took very little adjustment to tune it in.
Just have to watch out at a fast food drive thru....lol!

That Tahoe helps you out a lot.
    A Saburban is even better.

I havnt tried a 5k, or 2k or even 1k, but they would require buying to test out. The K40 on the otger hand needs maybe a ½" or 1" to be spot on under 1.2 on SWR for 1 and 40.

From everything I have seen, thats pretty darn good!

I use a K30 mag mount by K40, on the roof of my Maxima. 1.1 SWR after cutting about 4 inches of the 40? inch whip. Trans. about 5 miles, rec. about 15 miles. Good enough for me. $20 plus free shipping off the 'bay.
