every one experience will very, As Im not an advocate for recaps, when I bought my truck it had 8 new recaps on it, and drove about 160,000 miles on them with out one blow out, i replaced with virgin, and only by virgin, but think recaps are getting better than they use to be

The thing is, a good recap is a GOOD tyre, I have had recaps last atleast as long as virgins.
The problem is when buying a set of stock recaps, let's say 8 of them, there is a great chance 1 or 2 or 3 of those 8 will fail and this is why I DON'T use recaps, they can cause terrible damage!
But a recap that has stood the test of time (5k mls, heavy load, hot weather) is a good tyre and shouldn't let you down.
And for those of you saying 70% of blow outs are virgins........ Umm I'm speechless. -
You get what you PAY FOR. Cheap RECAP on poor casing will give you trouble as will a cheap offshore no name virgin tire.
Proper maint on tires helps as well , see / hear so many running down the road with UNDERINFLATED tires regardless of recap[ or new and when they blow its the TIRES fault.48Packard Thanks this. -
Virgin tires and Recaps are basically made the same way. Tread is applied to a casing.
If the tread is bonded properly, there isn't a problem.
The gators out there are caused primarily from low pressure, causing overheating, then breaking down the bonding, causing the tread to peel off.
If every trucker checked their tires daily (with a tire pressure guage, not a billy) we would have far less tire failures and gators on the road. -
Yes virgins blow I've had 1 blow maybe 2! -
Where did the recap casing come from? What were the circumstances of it being recapped? Answer: They don't know!
Take for example, the tread from a virgin steer tire starts to cut/cupping with a lot of good tread left. The company that doesn't run recaps will replace the steer tires and get the truck aligned. What do they do with the steers that still have deep tread...but have started to cut/cup? They run them on a trailer for about another 40,000 to 50,000 miles then replace and sell them for recapping.
So, this now 1st time recap casing has been run down the road 50,000 to 60,000 miles not completely round due to the cupping. Now some imbecile that thinks they are saving a buck and the environment buys this 1st time recap and boasts that it's just as good as virgin rubber...Last edited: Aug 7, 2011

I personally believe the larger contributing factor is the continuing decline of the frequency of the PTI, a direct result of the continuing decline of the skills/efforts/caring of the "professional" drivers of today.
Case in point: About two weeks ago, I was at our Gary, IN operating center getting fuel. I also wanted to get a low tire checked out on the trailer. As I was sitting in the tire bay having it replaced, I watched the outbound lane of the OC. Stationed there is a Schneider employee to do a quick "thump" of tires before we leave. There were four consecutive trucks that were turned around and prevented from exiting. Why? One driver had a trailer on which was a tire that was flat...so much so, it was pretty much off the rim. Two other drivers had tires that were technically flat, but not as bad as being off the rim. The remaining driver had a tire what was worn out and had cord showing. Four consecutive trucks turned back to the shop for stuff that should be caught on the PTI or on a walkaround enroute.
Lazy. Pure and simple. -
Cheap is cheap, and there is no difference between the guy that puts on cheap caps and the guy that puts on cheap virgin rubber. In both cases they probably also skimp or cut corners in other areas too. IMHO, with few exceptions, you pretty much get what you pay for. I'm not against getting a bargain, but cutting corners unncecessarily is just going to end in tears at some point. YMMV. -
Reguardless, the example I used an X-ray would tell you nothing. Yeah, it may stop them from recapping tires that some rookie was jumping curbs with but that's it.
FWIW: Recapping IS skimping, Period. -
