I run a 54 to 58,000 pound tandem and my boss constantly tells me not to run on the highway over 60 mph because recaps swell more than orginal tires. That true?
why would they swell?--it is the same casing--therefore air containment is the same--the cap is only really just the wearable surface
I didn't read all the posts, so this might have already been said: The number one reason for tire failures of ANY kind is low tire pressure. The further below designed pressure you run a tire, the hotter it runs. All tires are made the same in they are put together in steps. The tread on a virgin tire is attached the same as the recap tread. It's just the virgin tire manufacturers have a higher quality process sometimes, and some recappers use cheaper bonding agents. I have had more tire losses with virgin tires than recaps over my 38 years, but that's probably because I have run virgin tires much more of the time. I check my tire pressure every day before starting out. I'm sure that is why I have had only two failures in the last 12 years. I have watched driver after driver, over the years, park their rigs in the evening, then jump out of their sleepers in the morning and never look at their tires. I have seen drivers leave truck stops with flat tires they never knew about because they are too lazy to check before starting out. Flat tires are the source of most gators and debris.
I've had more tires blow due to debris on the road ... such as car parts, furniture, building supplies, wood scrap, etc ... Let's do something about these overloaded pickups and scrap collectors too ...
I ran Both Caps and Virgin out west in the Middle of 110 Degree heat. What causes the trouble is Low Air Pressure and Heat Build UP. I never had a recap fail even on the Hottest days. However I always checked my Tires with a Gauge carried a tire Chuck with me and would and did INFLATE them when needed. See what happens when a tire is Recapped is they XRAY the tire and if there is a defect it is repaired if possible via a Section repair if not they SCRAP IT that is Bandags policy. As for never seeing a Virgin tire blow at 130. Nope mine always BLEW up at less than 100 PSI as I was having them mounted. I lost track of how many Brigestones that Exploded in the cage as they were being mounted. Best one was the one that took out the Airglide on my T2000 in 1999. Then the company tried to make me pay for it since they said I was abusing the truck. LRI Tire Blew on my truck Zipper Failure 2 miles out of the SHOP and I was under a 46K lb Beer load and it took out the OUTER tire. I requested Road Maintance come out and Change the tires. They sent out Brigestone with 2 new ones. Well he gets the first one on the rim blasts it and it is filling leans it against the truck. IT EXPLODES and takes out the entire Left hand side of an Airglide 200 on a KW as it Blew 2 bags and busted 2 links. I send another message to the shop Send me a hook as the Tire man just took out the freaking Suspension system.
Love it when the CB RAMBOS are discussin RECAPS and how they never use anything but NEW tires and they blow by in the LEFT LANE , you hear more than 1 tire going WOMPY WOMPY ( real low on air ) tell them get the YOU DRIVE YUR TUCK AND I DRIVES MINE . Get up the road and see the blown tire carcass and BBR sitting on the shoulder.
The tire makers and recappers all claim that virgin rubber will blow out just like the recaps do if you are running underinflated tires and/or overloaded. I have heard this time and time again. They claim that GOOD recaps are almost as good as new tires... Best thing you can do is dont be lazy and cheap. Keep your tires inflated, get a good alignment, and keep the suspension maintained. (this means changing shock absorbers and suspension parts more than once a lifetime...). Wheel hop from bad shocks and worn suspension parts does as much damage to tires as anything else...
I call BS on the virgin tire blowing like the recaps!!! Been doing this 20 yrs and only had 1 virgin tire let go and I was parked when it happened. I can't even start to count the recap tires blown over the years and the damage I have seen and had done because of them. Here at Landstar they are running caps now on the trailers and have the air system as well where the tires are always aired up and the tires are bagdad's are whatever and they blow left and right especially in summer!!! You see the gator's all over the roads as proof but some people still refuse to see why even cars won't run them anymore.
