New hires stay on the road weeks at a time by choice.
Some new hires don't want that and hire on with companies that are home weekly or home daily.
Trust me on this, some new hires say they don't want to be gone from home for weeks, because that's what the wife wants to hear.
Making a career change, could use some advice

I do however still consider a local option as a good choice, I appreciate all the examples of local companies that were offered. I think staying local is a great option for someone wanting to get behind the wheel and see their families each night. Thanks again

I paid for my cdl out of pocket and got my class a with all endorsements and no restrictions on May 3rd. I was hired 2 weeks later hauling fuel and LP locally. Just finishing training. I work a 4 day week, about 10 hours a day… we have 12 hour shifts if we need the extra time. I’m paid hourly, over time after 40, excellent benefits, great equipment. Winter I can pick up a 5th day for some great overtime.
I freakin love it. Also is a huge career change for me. And a big change for my family (yup, one of those young families). So far it’s been great, plenty of family time…. Just a weird shift but still get some great time with the family. Lots of great jobs out there in trucking, even a few for rookies.
Just wanted to share my experience, I know their is many more that are happy with local trucking and family life.Stonehjl, Speed_Drums and Val_Caldera Thank this. -

So I’m a bit confused here, I thought owner operators can make some crazy money. Why is it hard to believe that my friend doesn’t make that kind of money. He has 2 main routes that he focuses on, one is New York and the other is Tennessee. I don’t need proof of the amount of money he makes. He lives in a 450k home, has 2 new vehicles and his wife does not work. They just went to Disney for 2 weeks and take multiple vacations a year. Someone would need to make a nice salary to have that type of lifestyle, kinda surprised he’s not marking more. This is actually something I have noticed, some will say you can make a lot of money trucking and others say it’s crap pay and not worth it. I understand certain parts of the country pay differently but that’s someone I have noticed a lot when people refer to their pay.

Ohiocdl22,
How did your Friend get started in that gig?
How long has your Friend been making that scrip?
What hurdles did your Friend overcome?
Thanks!

So he purchased the truck maybe 4 years ago, I don’t think he has been doing it for much longer than that. He is actually the reason I started thinking about this career. I’m sure it wasn’t easy for him, he was in sales prior and wanted a change. I think anytime someone makes a change and starts something new it’s scary at first. I know I would be worried at first starting a new business knowing I have a family to take care of. I think driving as a career is a great choice for many, it offers great opportunities and a chance to see the world. If I didn’t have a young family I would honestly consider buying a nice truck and driving coast to coast.
