it doesn't matter if they have a cdl. 2 truckers can never agree on the price of a free cup of coffee. so it's better for the people in the office not to have a cdl. they don't need it to do office working...

Yes. I misread the question. I thought the OP was eluding to dispatchers. Although I was right about the hair and hooters.

I will say it is better if they never had a cdl, I have worked with some management that expected all their drivers to be the same "super truckers" they were back in the day. Heard way too many times "that's not how I would've done it", etc. Obviously not all managers with a cdl are this way (I am one LOL), but enough of them have a very skewed memory of what it was like on the road. It can be handy to weed out the drivers that are full of crap, but no, it is not a requirement to have been a driver to be a good manager, completely different skill sets.

It doesnt matter . If they had / have a cdl all they can do is " relate to " or " understand " a situation but really cant do anything to change it .
Shippers want thier crap picked up on time , recievers want thier crap delivered on time , and thats ALL that matters .

My dispatcher has a cdl and still drives sometimes. He doesn't bother me and I don't bother him. He texts me my loads for the week and I don't call in unless there's a problem with a bol pickup or delivery #. He usually has to text me to see if I'm still alive lol, and tells me to check in at least once every 2 or 3 days. I've got a pretty good job so I can't complain. Now I'm with the group who thinks it doesn't matter or they shouldn't have or ever had a cdl. Do business and office work is way different than driving. I want my dispatcher to be good at keeping me busy. He or she isn't going to be any better at it if they have a cdl.

So wait.........you think this is UNUSUAL?

See, i think companies are going about this all wrong; Instead of hiring managers based on if they we're able to read a book and pass tests---thus enabling them to earn a degree, companies should instead give potential manager candidates AN IQ TEST irregardless if they have a degree or not! And base the hiring decisions on the IQ test results instead.

BTW i was a dispatcher/safety person after i got my CDL. And all the drivers actually liked me.

i think the best trucking company would be one where the managers have CDL's AND know how to fix the trucks.......

    P.S.
Something just doesn't feel right when no member of mgmt has a CDL although i do agree there were places like that where i worked and it was OK to pretty good.

I agree with you Russian. It's basically the same as most dmv examiners are trained how to test a student driver but they've never driven a tractor-trailer a day in there lives. Let alone have a cdl
