We've both been out of hours before... You just don't have he opportunity sometimes to do a rolling reset..
When I ran team I'd start working on a rolling reset when we still had 30+ hours. Sometimes it just doesn't work out

HAHAHA that's too #### funny!! How many times you think that's happened in the early years? "hey, it's me Johnny boy, listen, can I get a advance on my pay, I'm in the slammer for a DUI and I need to bail out."

So, let's do some simple math (which has been done on this forum before) to see if running on recaps vs a reset is more profitable.

We're going to use 60mph as the average speed. Math is the same no matter the speed used, and 60mph is easy.

Also, we're going to use 15 min for pre trip and 5 min for post trip every day. Ignore fueling and talking to the pretty lady at the guard shack on duty time, this is for the math only.

So, first driver is driving for a full 11 hours every day. His company doesn't care if he parks on the shoulder of the interstate or in the median. He drives the full clock. With pre and post trip, that's 11.33 hours every day. He runs out of hours on day 6 and uses 67.98 hours of his clock. Since he drove for 66 hours at 60 mph, he drove 3960 miles. He uses day 7 to reset and is back on the road. In 4 weeks (28 days) he's able to drive (66 x 4 x 60) 15840 miles.

Second driver is running recaps. He knows he has to work exactly 8.75 hours a day to never run out of hours. With the pre trip and post trip, that leaves him with 8hr and 25min to drive every day. At 60mph he drives 505 miles a day. 3535 miles a week. In 28 days this driver is able to drive 14140 miles.

Third driver is working at a company that does care about parking on shoulders. It has to be safe and legal and he better drive as far as possible until he finds it. So he drives 6 days, same as the first driver, but parks after 10.5 hours of driving every day. Using the same math as the first guy, the third guy is able to drive 630 miles a day. Since he's using day 7 to reset (even though he has more than 5 hours left on his 70) he is driving 3780 miles a week. 15120 miles in 28 days.

So, that's a lot to read. But what it shows is that the first and third guy are getting more miles. It also should point out that the first and third guy do have hours to fuel and check in at shippers since they both still have hours left on 70.

Anyhow. The reset is good for you. If you're able to run your hours out to take one, do it. But it doesn't always work out like that.

@RedRover I sincerely wish you the best of luck, man. None of us are perfect, even those of us who flagrantly act as such. I'm willing to bet my farm that some of the guys I went to school with got away with....."murder" ...... Per se :-\ ....
Even if you DO start with CC or Western Express, which is another 'forgiving' company. . . you will indelibly be more valuable to the industry than some of the young'guns with silver spoons. I'd park near a CC guy at a truck stop any day over so many of the others i won't even mention. You and @Weeezerd can be such a huge future to our profession, as we need more humility, reality, and balls on the road anymore!
Ps: yes, @pattyj ..some gals got a pair somewhere/somehow .... The wife does, too!!!
Be safe, drivers. Good luck in your endeavors! !!

When we teamed we ran our tails off then reset when needed, by that time you needed 24 off. Also if you time it right truck only has to stop 24 hours. Person a is in bunk for 10 hrs, take 24 off then person a drives out while person b is in bunk finishibg reset.

10cpm? That can't be right. You'd have to run 150k a year just to gross $15,000.00

It's been covered already but no, there is no way to run hard every day and not take a 34 hour reset. 8.75 hours a day is the magic number where you will never have to do a reset.

As mentioned above, that 70 hour time is for driving AND on-duty entries. I like running on my recap, since I just really hate sitting around for a day and a half when I'm out. I like to reset at home where I can relax, do some domestic stuff, maybe have some fun. Every driver has to run his own clocks, and dividing 70/8 you get that 8.75 hrs/day. Don't forget, that's an average not a goal. 8.75x62mph average yields about 550 miles/day. That's not bad, 550 miles/day average yields 3,850 miles/week. Average. If you can get that as an average, you'll be a very successful truck driver.

See above for my reasons, Truck. The only thing I want to do out there is drive my truck, make some money, head for home. I don't like truck stops, or rest areas, and it's hard to buy fishing licenses in all these dang states.

You have pretty succinctly expressed my view on the subject. I can sit on my ### and avoid my family from the comfort of my home. To justify being away from them, I need to be making money. My woman's support for me getting into this industry and making that sacrifce(it's her and my kids making it, not me) is based almost entirely on her desire to see me be the successful provider for them that she envisions me being. 3800 miles per week would be basically my ever present goal. It's definitely what I hope to attain. But most likely, the shipper or receiver or dm or dispatch will ruin that for me. And of course a random DOT knock on my window while I'm in the sleeper. If I maintain an average of 3200-3500 miles per week, I would be very happy. Will be shooting for those fabled miles though.
