So why the hell would you take off in a vehicle that's 10 times heavier in a higher gear......

No, my training was my co worker making sure I could get through all the gears for a day and them sending me out in a 20 year old truck on my own the next day. I work for a 3 person company so it's not like I rode with someone for a month.
