Mapping your route. What do you use?

The GPS in my truck is the one on the qualcomm, It can be set for trucks or cars, I use it every trip, but I do not RELY on it....just sayin

 

This is the map I use. It works Ok for most of my trips ...

You can use the satellite view on Google maps to see if there is truck traffic on that highway.

I can't see any trucks on it, but I have driven worse roads.

 

I've been on Crow Canyon Rd. in my car. It's been a couple of years, though. It's used extensively to cut the corner from I-580 -> I-680; those heading north on 680 from San Mateo and such use it.

It's a long, winding 2 lane road. I don't know about legality; however, you will probably end up with a stack of cars behind you with drivers cursing the day you were born.

Honestly, I'd recommend staying on the Interstates. The difference is only 7 miles, and the Interstates will likely be faster anyway.

 

I don't drive a big truck but I haul rv's all over. I use Microsoft Streets and Trips 2013 and find it very useful. I have a gps antenna hooked to it and I'm able to see where I am. I'm able to see where all my stops are and able to add push pins of my info. It shows where weigh stations, rest areas and alot more are. It took me awhile to get it set up like I like it but I don't head out without using it to trip plan.

the other day, leaving Hartford CT to Memphis TN, there are so many ways to go (80-71-65) (84-81-40) and they dont differ more than a few miles, so i pick the ones with the less hills, and i am on my way

by the way, i was debating with another driver, given a heavy load, which do you consider "more hillier" i80 thru pa and then 65 in KY, or i81, from scranton to bristol and then 40 to memphis?

Most places I go now I've been to before. Get into the habit of writing down directions for places you've been.

Surprised no one has mentioned the phone. Nothing better for the last mile than a call to the customer.
