Not sure why anyone would want to factor out idle time anyway. You still have x number of miles and x fuel cost. Cost per mile is going to be what it is. What difference does it make? Sure, one would want to keep idling to a minimum to save cost, but in the mpg calculation, it really doesn't make sense. And some idea of what an engine might use idling is subjective at best and no true indicator of what it did actually use. Everyone knows that idling uses fuel and to get the least cost/mile, keep idling to a minimum. But claiming a particular mpg with or without idling is nonsense. Unless one is just trying to make their mpg numbers look better to others by factoring out idle time. That is pretty disingenuous and kinda like how the government, by leaving certain items out (like food and fuel), claims that inflation is not as bad as we all know it really is.
Everytime I mention mpg numbers here or elsewhere, it is always just the simple number of miles driven divided by the gallons used. No hidden agendas or messing with the numbers to try and make things look better than they really are.
