Yeah we're talking CYA 101 here...using the lock is just way too easy to not use it.

30 seconds to keep your job by using the steering gear lock as per company policy, or possibly months of unemployment?

Think i'll go with the 30 seconds.

Some of the older Columbias had a joint in the steering mechanism down by your feet same as the one under the hood. You could install the lock there really fast. It was a little tricky but if you hit everything just right it only took about 15 seconds.

7071 had this. Another great thing 7071 had was cruise buttons on the gear shift. I really got to liking those!

Last April they put me in a newer Columbia (7573) that didn't have either of those things. So I had to go back to lifting the hood. Takes me about 90 seconds, and if it's raining you get wet. The choice between 90 seconds and months of unemployment is still pretty obvious.

Left marten year and half ago, all and all good company Mathemtrucker hit it a little closer to home on al things. But on laod bars lost them all the time with sealed drops but never had a problem finding more in fact would end up with more then I could store on truck would keep a coulpe at home so could grabem if I was short on my way back out the box. And in regards to stering lock I took plastic cover off bottom of stering colum inside tractor and placed stering lock there, only putting it under hood if I was in terninal. An yes you would get canned if found not to it have on there.

All the big companies are treating drivers like ****. They will make your life a living ****. So more and more people will be unemployed because of an unfair DAC, possibly on welfare and food stamps. The way to stop these mean people from messing up millions of lives, is park all the trucks. Marten, Swift, Interstate, JB,England, ETC. Get a set of balls, or a back bone and stand up to these idiots and make them treat you with RESPECT. Or maybe not, and wind up on unemployment eating top raman. Somebody needs to get a good lawyer and start taking these lieing, cheating no good big companies to court. I can't believe they make you sign all those stupid papers in orientation that just come back to haunt you. I wouldn't sign 'em thats for sure.

The bigger the company the more impersonal it's going to be. This applies to pretty much any large organization not just those in the transportation industry.

However if you want to interest me in standing up to my company all you have to say is "per diem." Yep that'll do it. Even being as used to large companies as I am, I still couldn't believe it when I realized what they were doing with their per diem campaign, which is committing fraud. Just because it's voluntary doesn't alter this. It's still fraud, plain and simple.

I retired from OTR trucking in October 2007, took over as manager for a small organization. Enough abuse from DOT, etc, was enough. The experience gained in all those years on the road was good. I have a high amount of respect for the guys I see driving 18 wheelers through town. It's a tough life style. I really don't know how Marten has changed since then. Sorry, but can't give you any current infomation.
