Moving Forward Thanks this. -
I had the JJ Keller AOBRD version in my truck from Jan 2017 until December 2017. It took them that whole time to get that version working fairly well. Then Dec 14 comes, switch to ELD version and we ditched the system on Feb 1st 2018 and transitioned over to EROAD.
Maybe they will eventually get it right. But they have demonstrated their unreliability as a vendor in spades. They assumed that once you picked a system you would stay with it no matter what.
It will be interesting to see how many vendors are still in the marketplace in December of this year. I am betting there will be at best 10 companies instead of the 175+ that were offering systems last year. -
I've been satisfied with the Garmin, except for a couple minor hickups. The lack of the §395.1(o) exception means it shows a violation and then it won't even let you use punctuation marks to cite the reg which states the alleged violation ISN'T actually a violation. Also lacks the §395.1(a)(3)(ii) exception for those operating under §395.1(e), and again it is difficult to cite a regulation when you can't use punctuation.
Only other problem I've had, is sometimes gets stuck on the drive screen and won't let you manually log off the drive line when you stop...unless you close the app and re-open it. Wastes time, but other than that, it seems to be working fine.
Of course I'd be much more upset if I were paying monthly for a service and it was still screwing up 4 months in...but there is no monthly fee for the Garmin.
As for the 1st issue, I've found that with an html editor, I can go in and alter (clean up) the notations to include punctuation...which will help in an audit, but NOT on the side of the road. Haven't played with it enough, but if you knew what you were doing (which I don't...), you could probably change the coding to alter the graph and any other info you needed to change...then save it, and nobody will know. I doubt this is exclusive to Garmin...any ELD which exports as html can be edited this way. If it exports a pdf, use a pdf editor. Any file type the device uses to export the files, you can probably find an editor to go back and make changes you might want or need to make WITHOUT raising any red flags (as would be present using the ELD app or system to make the same changes). Isn't technology wonderful? I'm not very technologically inclined and I figured this out. For somebody who knows what they are doing, elogs are definitely going to be better for them than paper just because it is ASSUMED to be "tamper-proof" and therefore not scrutinized as closely as paper logs saying the exact same thing might be.25(2)+2 Thanks this.
