What the heck makes you think you're special enough to have a six digit truck number?!? The rest of us are perfectly happy with our 5 digits.

I think he just one-upped the entire Maverick fleet...

Yah me too, Its been unseasonably cold and haven't had the chance to do any naked pushups on an empty trailer while waiting for my next load. That and my Maverick speedo is still in the summer bag under the bunk.

Just wondering. The school I went to in NC had us do nothing but back trailers for a week. And they also did the testing there. NC requirements for the backing portion of the test were at the time a straight line back and a 45degree back with the DOT bumper in a box. The problem was you could really do poor on that and a few other things and still do well enough to score enough points to pass! I don't agree with the process at all, but I think it is going to change in the future. I have worked in this industry (just not driving) since 1998 and dealt with thousands of drivers and companies. I have probably seen more drivers that can't back than drivers that can!

If he said Cross Country in Thomasville, NC something isn't right. That's a great school in the area to go. Reasonably priced and they spend days just backing (not a 10/2 split) They cover just about everything you need to know to be a trucker. If you didn't get something then you stayed until you did.

Now if it was Future Truckers of America in Asheboro I would understand. They are tied in with USA some how. Had a friend go to that one. Hubby went to Cross Country. Huge difference. Friend wish he went to Cross Country. He said he might still be in trucking if he did.

In talking with him about his cdl schooling, it sounds like he was going to cdl school during whatever vacation time he accrued full time, then they let him come back and "finish" what he described "the chart". I'm assuming its a check off list of some sort saying he completed the requirements to obtain his cdl. He said it took him a month to finish the chart. I asked him to add up the total amount of time he actually spent behind the wheel of the truck backing. he said probably 3 hours. He said the on the road driving portion of the school was 3 days, 6 hours, 8 hours, 6 hours. I'm not blaming the cdl school totally for my current students issues but he also kept saying they weren't allowed to do a lot of driving because they didn't have the instructors available to supervise......GEE THEN HAVE A WAITING LIST UNTIL YOU CAN HIRE MORE QUALIFIED INSTRUCTORS!!!!!! but of course its all about the benjamins and if there's people knocking down your door to pay $2500 or whatever amount, to obtain their cdl, then the doors wide open if that's the way the director or whatever title the BMOC has chosen to give himself wants his school to be run, then that's the way it'll be run. I don't even have a problem with instructors from the school are certified to administer the final exam to get the license but again it depends on the honesty/integrity of said instructor. I have never been to the cdl school he attended. I can only speak of my own. We had 2 yard trucks that were used to practice backing manuvers, and one road truck, We were always doing one of 3 things, classroom instruction, backing on the yard, or driving out on the road. Our final exam was given by a Kentucky State Trooper. If you failed, you couldn't take the exam again until the next testing day. If I remember correctly, they tested on Mondays and Thursdays..........................................................with all of the above being said, with Maverick NOT HAVING ANY KIND OF ROAD TEST OR BACKING PRACTICE, they hire new drivers straight out of cdl schools, put them through 2 weeks of intense classroom training and then assign them to an instructor for a minimum of 21 days (no maximum) but there has to be a point in time where it costs Maverick less to let a new driver go rather than keep him. 18 days of actual driving and my student is just now at the stage where he backs in what I would describe as over steer over correct over steer over correct with the tractor swinging wildly from side to side instead of in a fairly straight line. He also has a member of his family that has taken ill and as far as I know is renting a car and going home to take care of that. If he doesn't go home, the plan as far as I have been informed is deliver the load to little rock Monday, then come to HQ to meet with the training department to discuss what Maverick is going to do..........................PROBLEM IS............................. In the 4 weeks he has been driving the truck (ive documented in detail each day) he's had so many instances of repeated day after day serious safety issues that I no longer feel safe with him behind the wheel............................SO............................he can remain in the truck with me and secure/ unsecure, tarp, untarp, help set up loads..............BUT...............he doesn't have a problem with that. For his safety, my safety, and the safety of the motoring public around us, I will no longer let him drive the truck issued to me by Maverick.......................CATCH 22. He needs to practice both safe backing and safe on the road driving.........I DON'T EVEN WANT HIM TO BE ASSIGNED TO ANOTHER INSTRUCTOR AND HAVE THAT INSTRUCTOR GO THROUGH WHAT I HAVE..................I told him what Maverick said they were going to do. He could've had a taxi waiting for him when we got to the hotel to take him to the rental car place, bus station, or airport to go home and take care of his sick family member OR get to the hotel and arrange transportation for himself back home OR ride with me to Little Rock and meet with the training department. No amount of additional cents per mile in my opinion is worth having someone with documented history of repeated serious safety violations (leaving his lane of travel with traffic next to him) If something happens once, its a mistake. Learn from it. three times, its a pattern, more than three, its a habit. I'd rather show someone an accident macro on the qualcom during down time, not have to fill out an actual accident macro and the down time created during the accident investigation because a student has not stayed to the outside of his lane of travel and smushed, what do they call them in orientation, "a family of 4" next to us under a trailer loaded with whatever, in this case over 48K of lumber.

Definitely cross roads and I'd like to get their side of the story as well. If they're willing to give it to me.
