Sarge, the CDL school I went to we had 4 yard trucks and 4 road trucks (2 autos with clutch, 2 manuals) that were also used when we took the state test. I am in Ohio, the state test consists of straight line backing, lane change to either the left or the right (the state chooses which side), Then you either get parallel park or 90 degree alley docking (state decides which one of these too). The school had us first practice straight backing and once the instructor felt you were good enough we went to lane changing and once we were good there we then went to parallel parking and alley dock. The yard consisted of practicing for two weeks and the road was one week. The test trucks are automatics with a clutch and they also have two other road trucks that are 10 speed manuals. The school does test you for their records, but it doesn't get you a CDL, you have to go to the state and get tested for that and it is by a state licensed examiner. The instructors encouraged us to practice as much as we can on all the maneuvers so we would be able to pass the CDL test. Which I practiced as much as I could. With Ohio if you fail the test you can't take the test again for another week. Ohio tests Tuesday through Saturday at the state sites. The state test consists of pretrip, maneuvers, and a road test. I failed the state test the first time. I did great straight line backing, got the right lane change and did great on that. I had parallel park and just couldn't parallel park the semi for anything that day. My nerves pretty much got the best of me. I just took the retake this past Thursday and had the same maneuvers as last time! Once again did great on straight line backing, did great on right lane change. I also finally paralleled parked the semi with no problems. The test trucks are sleeper cabs with 48' trailers. So your talking about a 60' in all truck. From what I understood the CDL school I went to was the only one in the area that actually used sleeper cabs and 48' trailers. The other schools all had day cabs with 40' trailers. I chose the school because of the size of the trucks. They would be about the same size of trucks that I would be driving. I was pleased with the school overall, it served its purpose and that was to train me to pass the state CDL test, which I did.

Looks like we made the top ten list again! http://finance.yahoo.com/news/10-of-the-most-dangerous-jobs-in-the-u-s--191643548.html

Judging from the Median annual salary, Hard Luck Harry should start running out of gas at the Airport instead of a T/S.
-
I think flatbedding should be higher, since we have to be around some many already dangerous professions that are higher on the list than us!

I'm in Goddard and I just got through a tornado warning. Unfortunately I'm on a 34, so I'm stuck for now. There was golf ball sized hail knocking the crap out of my pumpkin truck about thirty minutes ago.

This is the only thing that scares me with trucking. Being out in the open in tornado and hurricane seasons. That's why a CB with NOWA weather channels and a TV is so important. Not just only for entertainment.
