Technically yes, but in my 15 months here I have never been sent to NYC. I did get to go once, when I was with my trainer. He had me freaked out that I was gonna become "a real truck driver" once I drove in NYC.
A few miles outside the city, he made me pull over and switch. I told him that I thought I was going to be driving, and he said "Are you ******* crazy?!? Maverick ain't about to let a driver with a week's experience drive in NYC! But it was fun watching you almost wet yourself!"
Ha ha ha. I got him back for that though, later on
But anyways, they reserve the right to send you into NYC if they need to, but it's extremely rare for TCD. I'm wondering if they're getting away from it entirely, because the risk is so high and the freight going there doesn't justify the cost, especially if a new guy wipes out half the interstate traffic while panicking. -
Our list of Canadian drivers is rather short. If you get sent on a delivery up in the NE, like Pennsylvania, there's a good chance you'll grab the New Jersey to Toronto run for Hilti if you have a passport or passcard. And sometimes you get on a loop with our Tulsa to Seattle/Vancouver runs. I did that a couple months ago, repeated that same run over and over for four weeks (I choose to stay out that long). Those were some #### good paychecks... One had almost 4100 miles on it.jxu417 Thanks this.

I've been to NYC three times and each time I swore I'd never go back.

Thanks for the canada info. i wouldn't mind running that. I have nothing to be home for anyway.
From what I was told is New York measures from the center of the hub up to measure bridge clearance. Not from the pavement up. But when your coming around a curve and see 12'8, (at least I did) you grab the wheel and wait for that sudden stop or ripping sound. They also repave and forget to change the signs. Every time I see a sci-fi movie and New York gets destroyed, I cheer. -
My husband drives for the TCD. He doesn't mind the Shoprite loads to Jersey, right across the bridge from Staten Island, NY (mainly because my family usually delivers lunch to him when he is there, lol). But there are some loads to NYC, but I think the only time he has ever been to Manhatten itself has been with his old company. He plans to get the passcard this hometime if he gets home on time. He just swapped a load with someone who has the passcard up in WY.

I've never heard that specifically about the bridges.
I do know that in NYC, the bridge heights that are posted are actually one foot less than the actual height of the bridge, to account for snow accumulation. So if you see a 13 ft bridge in NYC, it's actually 14 ft high. But this only applies within the city. Be careful about this, and check your atlas to be sure. You won't find any 12 ft bridges on truck approved roads. -
I learned this in the Mid-'80's with my then brand new 13'-6" Utility. I saw the bridge sign. locked up the brakes, and bailed for the shoulder. After about 10 min, a passing Fed-Ex truck stopped laughing long enough to get on the radio and explain to his ####ry cuz how they did things in the big city. Most embarrassing, but I chalked it up as a cheap lesson.jxu417 Thanks this.

Lots of people tend to forget, something that goes for Manhattan like the way they measure bridge heights also goes for Staten Island, Queens, Brooklyn and the Bronx. They are all part of the city. (I grew up there but got FAR away as soon as I could)

What's really funny is when you talk to people in upstate New York. They won't admit that NYC is part of their state LOL.
