Theres not a whole lot to Orientation. They just go over all of there Policies, and do a physical&drug screen. If your applying for reefer you take a 6 hour class on how to run there units.

i am seeing things that makes me think maerick is going back to sending drivers to CDL school . when i hired on at maverick 5 years ago i went through the school for them at ASU in newport. was i reading that wrong or have they started doing the complete schooling again. also unfortunately i am not driving for them because of medical reasons i was a trainer for 3 years until this illness hit but i definately hope to be back ith them very soon. snyone who is wondering about how good of a company they are well i really dont have anything personally to compare them too but i do know they have treated me great while i was on the road for them and even after i had to leave due to my illness and they even keep in touch with me now even with me not being a driver . they are really great people all the way from the [people in training through the corporate office people and even to steve williams they all treat you as a person not just a number. i think they are a great company and cant wait til i am back in the drivers seat of another 2011 model trainer truck

well the orientation mostly consists of on sundays you start going over policies and starting to work with logs , monday is mostly agfilities testing and then going for a dot physical, you wil also have a drug screen at that time and then the fun begins you will be talked to my some of the higher ups from corporate and safty then have th benefits people come over and during the rest of the week you will fill out all of your paperwork that is required.there will be a little homework not much takes bout an hour at the most. now it has been a few years since i went through it myself so some could have chanced withthem converting to paperless logs. but after all of that if it is like it used to be you will be offered a job with them on thursday afternoon . i was a driver for them for 5years i am not now due to an illness that keeps me disabled for now i was also a trainer for them for 3 years so if yhere is anything i can ever help you with just send me a message and i will be happy to help if i dont know the answer i definately know where to get it for you

Its the physical training that I am worried about. I was told you go though the same physical training as the flatbed. I applied for reefer and I'm not sure the I can lift the tarps. I can climb all over a truck from bottom to top. Just not sure about getting the tarp up in the air.

well darlin i amnot sure about whatyou go through for the temp control division but actually the physical test isnt really that difficult. i have knowna few ladies thatwere kind of small that got through it with no problem . i really cant see them having someone getting into the temp division having to lift tarps but that is the only part if the phys test that is hard but i can definately find out is they have to do everything and give you some advise on the easiest way to d that too

You wont have to do a flatbed class if you're going reefer as far as I know. However you WILL do a physical agility test that serves two functions,1. Proves you can lift the DOT required 60lbs (that is a requirement for ALL CDL holders no matter the company) 2. Gives Maverick a baseline of your abilities so that IF you get hurt on the job they already know what physical ability you had and they will only pay to heal you back to that point. Basically dont come here with a bad back and think they will fix it for you on work comp.

Well, if you can climb all over a truck from bottom to top, you can surely find a way to lift, wedge, end over end a tarp to the top of your freight! Lifting a tarp is not easy, but can be done wisely. I, and many drivers I see carry a step ladder to use for climbing & when needed, walking a tarp up to the height you need to flip it on your shoulder, then on your load. You can only try....give it a shot!:biggrin_25525:

I did my two months ago. They lock down the orientation building; so no one gets in or out. If you smoke wait until the physical is over. So that it doesn't make your B.P. go up. They will take your blood pressure when you first start. If it is high they will give you a break and tell you to drink some water and then check it again (that's what happened with a guy that was in my class). He passed and now is a driver for Maverick. Anyway, you will have to do a step test. Where you step up and down on a board for, I think 2 mins. They will check all your movements. Take your hand/arm raise it straight up and bend it back and MAKE SURE you can touch your shoulder blade. I saw a guy get sent home because he couldn't do that. The reason for that is because there is some places we go that requires you to use a safety harness and if you can touch your shoulder blade, then you wont be able to hook up the harness. You will get what seems like a massage, but it's to check the alignment of your spine, your muscles and see how far you can stretch. You will take a piss test (you empty your pockets in front of the person administering the test), and an eye exam. There is one station where you will have to pick up weights in a box. The first box will be light and they will tell you to pick it up to your chest. As you do each one, they will add more weights to the box until you are finished. If i remember correctly, the most weight you will pick up to your chest is 120lbs. That is to make sure you can pick up the tarps. Some guys can't pick up that much weight and they didn't fail. You will also do a grip test; where they will measure your grip in each hand. The morning of the physical, don't stress out over it because your Blood Pressure will go up. As far as I know, the above is all the physical consisted of. Hope this helps! Don't sweat it at all. Maverick is here to see you succeed. If you have any questions about anything, no matter if you think it would be a dumb question or not; ASK IT. There is no such thing as a dumb question.
Also, one thing I tell everyone who is new; don't buy a GPS and expect it to get you from point A to point B everytime. You will get lost more often than not. A friend of mine who is a Maverick flatbedder found out the hard way, not to trust solely on his GPS to get him to a consignee. He was running out of drive time; so he called me and asked if I would get out my map and tell him how far he was from his consignee. I pulled my truck off at the next exit and pulled out my map and found out where he was. He was on what they call "other road". He wasn't suppose to be on that road in the first place. I told him he was about 10 miles from a main road. His drive time ran out while he was on that "other road" and he had to sit there all night to take his 10hr. break; hoping someone didn't come around the road and hit his truck. I asked him, what made him decide to take that road. He was like, well I was doing what my GPS told me. Don't get me wrong I use a GPS, but I only use it as a tool; not as my sole source of directions. I use my atlas and Mavericks directions 95 Percent of the time. I will shut up now, have a blessed week.

Ramloghauler the next time your buddy gets lost on a side road and runs out of hours remind him that he is allowed by law to continue travel to the nearest safe place to park. If your friend indeed done what you say he is fortunate not to have been involved in an accident parked on the side of some road. That WILL get you terminated here at Maverick. I run e-logs,as will everyone very shortly, and there has been a time or two when Ive exceeded either the 14 or 10hr rules to reach a safe haven. NEVER park on a shoulder unless you dont value your job here.

Yea I just got off the phone with him and told him what you said. He said he was trying to find a safe place to park, but his hours ran out and he didn't want to get in trouble for exceeding them.
I wouldn't be on here now, but I am at good ole fort smith.
