that is good advise on the GPS i dont use one myself but i do know drivers that have really been put in trouble spots from depending on his. i do use a routing program on my laptop but i dont depend on it i compareits route with my map and mavericks routeing . and if there is any questions i dont care what they tell yo i will call my shipper ir consignee for directions. and you new drivers need to doublecheck the directions you get from maverick . the directions are put in by drivers and sometimes mistakes are made . i had directions tht sent me 20 miles away from where i needed to be because the directions had me turn left and i needed to go right ,believe me philadelphia pa is no place for a 3 month driver to be at 11 pm and finding a place to turn around isnt easy so please double check even directions . and i cant emphasize enough if in doubt call your shipper or consignee, i have never had 1 get mad at me just be professional when you do call and be vry polite they usually will be very helpful

It seems that People only use GPS for driving. I do use a "car" GPS, Not for directions but for ETA. Most Garmin learn your average moving speed and do a pretty awesome job at calculating your ETA.

And YES, nothing beats calling a shipper/consignee to get directions, some of Maverick's are "fishy" and could make you go nuts when you are short in time.

Got a brand new 2012 cascadia, This truck is awesome, the DD15 is a beast, just wish it was a little lighter 30,300# light weight (1/2 tank of fuel)
This truck is the Cadillac of all trucks and ride like one.

Enjoy it while it lasts. Once you hit 60k and get your first overhead run that "beast" will become a mouse.

I've got the Rand Mcnally TND 500. They just came out with the 510,so while supplies last u can still pick up the 500 for 250. If ur ganna get one why not go with the company who makes the maps u use? Imo. With that said its pretty #### accurate. Id say its spot on 95% of the time. It'll certainly get u there well within the 10% out of route. It had my eta accurate to with in 11 seconds last week! I kidd u not I told fleet mang. I would be there # 15:13, I got there # 15:12:49. Life time map updates. If ur ganna get one, again u can't go wrong with that bad boy. I try to go with Mav routing, but if I see a cr im goin arround it. Like I said if im 5%-7% out of route on a 700 mile trip taking better roads... im all about it.

    McLeod,
Hey man how's it going? I'm thinking about getting myself the Rand McNally GPS. This Garmin dezl 560 isn't worth the money I paid for it. I use Mav's directions and my Atlas to get me where I'm going. I just use this thing for lane assist.

I think it was second pickup as being a new driver on my own and I listened soley on my GPS and got so lost it wasn't funny. I called the shipper and asked them if they could tell me how to get to their place from where I was sitting. The lady on the phone told me to stay where I was and she would send someone to get me; so that I could follow them back to the place. I had saw my trainer use a GPS and thought I would be fine using one to. However, I was WRONG! He had been trucking for 19 years and knew which roads to take. He said to use a GPS as a tool not as my sole source of navigation. I thought I could use it as my sole source of navigation and got my butt lost. They tell you not to call the shipper or consignee, but if I'm not sure of where I am going, I always call. I would rather be safe than sorry.

First thing you have to realize,a truck specific GPS started life as a car gps. I hear guys talk much as you do about these truck specific GPS and imho you guys are relying too much on that thing never being wrong. Fact is just because a road is okay for trucks doesnt mean that its your fastest or safest route. Ive talked to two guys who relied on their truck specific gps and it bit them in the butt. One had to pay a large fine. Dont get me wrong a gps is great when used as a TOOL,but I still determine my route from looking at my route on a map. My gps would have me short cutting on every two lane if I followed it.
