I went to CDL school in Florida last July and mine was a 320 hour program 2months long..There were guys in there that could not back a truck to save them..it was crazy..it's scary seeing some of these guys getting a CDL of course at my school if you could not back a truck u did not pass....
-
I think the problem with this is a lot of people try to overthink the process when backing. I used to try to solve it like a geometry problem, and I was horrible, until my trainer literally had to say "Stop using your #### brain and just back it in the hole!"
I know it seems contradictory to tell someone to avoid thinking something through, especially since there seems to be a lack of brain usage among drivers these days. But if I am backing into a dock, and I start thinking about what I'm doing, I'll screw it up so bad you'd think I was a first day student. If I just look at the hole and back it in, I have no issues... but if I even try to think about it... I'm screwed.
LOL I remember the one thing that I'll never forget about training was that there was this invisible fleet of trucks that followed me around and filled up all the spots in truck stops except for the one my trainer told me to back into, and he said if I didn't get it in there correctly, that the invisible redneck driver of the invisible $250,000 Peterbilt was gonna beat me senseless with his invisible tire iron for messing up his invisible hood and ruining his invisible business.
After that little speech I was laughing so hard I stopped thinking and just backed it in. Funny how that works lol. -
Well so far so good passed the physical
jxu417 Thanks this. -
Ok I have some random questions. But first a little background, I'm 29 I will have one year OTR experience July 4th pulling dry vans. I love my company but it's time to try flatbed.
1) How long would I be in training/orientation? Will I have to be with a driver trainer?
2) Approximately what percentage of the loads are tarped?
3) Does Maverick truly run all 48 or are most loads east of 35?
4) Does Maverick route you and have pre planned fuel stops or is that up to the driver? -
How's it going with training Andrewrhyne1986????
-
it depends on what you're doing . I'm in flat bed.
4 days of orientation, 4 days of hands on learning to secure and tarp
3 days into my 5 or 6 weeks of driver training. so far, I've been doing my own trip planning
about 90% is tarped
I"m in RSW Regional southwest heading to kansas. -
It's going good passed all my test so far got one more tomorrow then hopefully job offer Thursday can't wait
-
I hope that helps a bit, and some of the flatbed guys can give you a bunch more details, but that's the general info I know.

Thank you, I am pretty sure I've decided to go with Maverick over TMC.
