Grindem said: ↑Are you guys involved with the expansion of I-35 in north Fort Worth, or just the big project in Dallas? The one in Fort Worth is about 7 miles from my house LOL.JimTheHut said: ↑To Jim the Hut from Grindem ,
I have the deepest respect for you Jim because you are the one who answered my questions about Maverick a year and a half ago and in turn led me to give it a shot at orientation.
All worked out for the best. When I returned home, I had calls from two different Dallas based local companies . One was oilfield work and the other company was End dump with plenty of OT
So I took the End Dump Job . This company gets revenue from state bond money that is paid quarterly to our headquarters for our expansion of hwy 114, loop 635 and Loop 820 (FtWorth) Two and a half years out we will start Interstate 35 Dallas. avg 57-61 hours per week when not raining. Truck fleet is approaching 100 units with nothing over three years old.
Their Catapiller Yellow Iron is so prolific that it could be lined up end to end to span around a good size city block. Not as big as Austin Bridge but we are working on a close second up.Click to expand...
I think that the big Dallas project will go a long way towards helping traffic in the area, which is good, because I HATE driving in Dallas LOL. I'll circle all the way around it just to get home.
I remember the last time that I tried to navigate the roads up there at 114/635/820... got lost, took a wrong exit somewhere, and ended up entering DFW airport. That day sucked LOL.Click to expand...Whopper Thanks this. -
Don't feel bad about taking a wrong turn out there on hwy 114 west near the airport because it has changed to where you have to take the fork in the road to the left to stay on the current path of 114 west.
That is the opposite of the way it has been for the past thirty years.
I don"t have any information on our involvement on the FtWorth 35 North. I Do Know that 820 meets I 20 at the sw edge of FtWorth. Between Hulen and Southern Pkwy has been ours for the last three years.
We started doing some underground work and Bridge construction work within the last year which are two fields that we usually leave to contractors like Cema and Archer Danial . For the most part we pick up crushed concrete
from the old highway, put in the inter-structure drainage and sculpture earth moving for new roads and ramps.
Traffic jams and sitting without moving for long periods of time used to bother me and co-workers as well..... but you have to change the mind set to realize that we are getting paid hourly and no by the load biz over here.
So the money stays the same even when an air line goes south or yellow iron pops a hydraulic line or whatever happens Your money doesn't stop because you are . You have on board computerized logs as well. No 30 min breaks required (your within 150 miles radius) and no reset cuz you have enough time at home to accomplish this . Hope this helps. -
I live in Memphis. A short drive from Little Rock. I was curious about how easily it would be to get a driver trainer around this area. I am considering flatbed and I have looked at maverick for a year now. Reading all the posts and such. My concern is this: I drive class b truck (but I have class a with no Otr experience). I am the driver supervisor at a local company. I get a salary of $540 a week notated how much I work. I am home daily. I really went through a lot to get my class a cdl and I want to make more money. Even if I do have to put in more hours to get it. Much as I put into getting the class a, I feel like I should be making more. Any useful opinions would be great. You guys and gals are all so awsome!
jxu417 Thanks this. -
You should have no trouble at all getting a driver trainer close to you. We have lots of them that live in Arkansas, and I'm sure there's plenty across Tennessee too. You're in a great area for flatbed, you could probably do regional and be home almost every weekend without a problem. Hell, living in Memphis, you'll probably do some of your 10 hour breaks there and your family can come have dinner at the truck stop with you (or, if you have a place to park at home, you can do that too.)Mrcwebster71 said: ↑I live in Memphis. You would DEFINITELY make more than $540 a week here. Hell, training pay alone is $550 a week. From what I understand from some of my flatbed buddies, just starting out it wasn't unusual for them to get $700 per week, and after a few months and a couple of raises most of the guys I know that do it are grossing over $1000 regularly. And that's not counting the bonuses you can get if you run your truck right (which could be worth over $150 per week if you're in the top tier). And, if you're one of those guys who doesn't mind getting held out every so often, sometimes they'll give you a couple of nice long runs if they know you won't get upset about missing a weekend home.
I'm sure the flatbedders will jump on here in awhile and be able to answer specific questions for you, but I can tell you that if you have a week here where you only make $540 (and you're not in training), something went wrong somewhere.
And, you're also in a great area for the temp control division if you decide flatbed isn't for you. I spend A LOT of time going through and delivering in Memphis. But with TCD you have to stay out 2 weeks at a time, and we do a lot more sitting at shippers and receivers than the other guys do. If sitting and waiting is one of those things that drives you crazy, you want to avoid TCD. I have my laptop, tablet, TV, DVDs, and all that to keep me occupied, so it doesn't bother me, but I've got friends in flatbed who would go crazy if they did my job for a couple weeks lol.
If you have any specific questions about the company, feel free to let us know, we're happy to help. -
CaptainX3, thanks a lot. I have to wait until the first of October to ensure I have my year in with my current employment. Last year I had been turned down by Maverick due to being laid off from a former employer. All was going well until I lost some time in between my layoff and current job.
Everything you mentioned is a big factor in my choosing Maverick. Positive and supportive employers and coworkers are the best be around! Thanks! -
First and foremost I would like to apologize if this question has been asked before. I am transitioning out of the U.S. Army and have been approved to drive for Maverick short of orientation. Everything I have heard about them has been amazing. But my question is, I live 4 hours from their closest terminal and have a Swift terminal 3 miles down the road. I have recently heard some not so good things about Swift but I am a recent school grad and don't know much. Is it more desirable to join a company with great marks and great pay or should I join Swift who is right down the road?

Read you question back to yourself AT202. How would YOU respond to your question? Truth is, only you can make the decision. You do live in SC, not sure which division you would fit in with Maverick, probably LNG (Longhaul) or maybe RAT (Regional Atlantic)- and I am not sure what your total situation is back home (family/kids/wife, ect) so not sure what your hometime expectations are there. However, Maverick IS an OUTSTANDING organization, and from my two years experience, the difference between the two that you mention is literally night and day. You are coming back from the Army, (Thank you for your service BTW) so you are seeking a squared-away outfit to join. You are seeking an organization that treats you with respect. You are possibly seeking to drive for a company in which many drivers from other companies will recognize as a good company to drive for- and maybe even wish they did too. You want to work hard and be well compensated for your hard work. Do I have your thoughts here? If so, I think you already know the answer to your question. Good luck!AT202 said: ↑First and foremost I would like to apologize if this question has been asked before. Thank you jxu417 for your response and yes I already knew the answer to my question. I was just poking to see if someone had anything to offer that would contest the validity of my decision. Like I said I am new to trucking and also am not sure which division I would fit in due to my listening to my instructors and not relying completely on the words of my recruiter. My situation is that yes I do have a family who are very important to me but we all know what I am getting into in this industry. Both my wife and I have fathers who are retired truck drivers but they have been gone from it for some time now. Once again I would like to thank you for your response and your help with my decision making. Transitioning from the military after eight years of service into an unknown industry has been very stressful.

At Maverick the recruiters are usually spot on so listen to them. SWIFT--Sure Wish I Finished Training is a joke among many truck drivers. Maverick carries PRESTIGE! Many drivers at Maverick are from the military. They are even considering a decal for those that were in the military with the branch you served on it. Good luck in what ever you decide.
