Help!?!
I have recently applied for training and a job at several places, including Maverick Transportation. Now, I have read enough quotes here to have figured out there is a Maverick flatbed and a Maverick Transportation.
I have read some really good SOLID things about one or the other,...but not enough to tell me if the one I applied to, the afore mentioned Maverick Transportation,...is a decent company for us newbies.
I have been self employed all my life, and have felt for years I would make a good driver. I am currantly a Realtor in Michigan,...and am also currantly STARVING to death,...bills on my desk so I cant see the surface anymore. I am smart, can handle myself alone, without going bonkers, actually I prefer being alone,..people drive me insane anymore,....try selling a house in todays market and tell me about STRESS!!
I have a pre-hire from a couple places,..Swift and Werner,,I know a guy who is in Werner now but haven't heard much good about it, from him or online, Swift,..forget it!! I have read sooooo many awful, horrible things about people losing everything by going there,..and I researched them and found they have one of the WORST safety records,...just like Werner.
My questions would be:
1. Is Maverick Transportation a good solid company that treats their drivers well? Pay?, Miles? Understanding the needs of the newbies without killing them off and picking the next in line?( Hell I know every company has crap to deal with, thats just life,. I can survive as long as I dont go to a SHARK company).
2. Being that I'm in Michigan,....should I try to go to school here?,....at a local training company or sign up for out of state training at the company I have chosen, ( I have checked into a couple CDL mills around where I live and have deceided that these people know less about teaching people than about rubber stamping you into a very dangerous business and dont care if you learn anything or not, I have been a salesman all my life,..I happen to know B.S. when I hear it!!!
The ONE school that sounded good,..was a college that has a 20 WEEK program,.I would LOVE to go there,..as I feel that they really teach you what you need to survive, and keep the public safe,..but Honestly,..I'll Be starved LOOOOONG before the 20 weeks is out.
Sorry to be so long winded,..I really need some help and I have respected what you guys do out there for our country, would really, really be grateful for some in depth advice.
Thanks for reading!! -
I am happy with maverick and we run MI quite a bit. I was getting up there about once a week, but it has been awhile since I have went there.

Hey Vulpine,
I'm new to trucking, actually I just graduated school not too long ago and one of my friends was actually an instructor at one of those 3 week schools that try to rip you off for 5 large. DON'T DO THAT, Please! I actually went with a good school here in Florida that was 14 weeks long and believe me you will not feel as confident and comfortable behind the wheel of a truck after 3 weeks versus 14 or 20. The school my buddy worked for only takes you out on the road once or twice and that's pretty much for your road test, my school gave me over 1200 miles highway and local experience. I wouldn't trade that for any other training out there. If you can stick it out and afford to survive through it I suggest you try it. -
Hey notarps. Tell me something. Is it as big a deal as "they" say when it comes to dealing with unions at steel mills and other places that you haul from. My brother said that Maverick hauls alot of steel and you can sometimes sit for hours waiting to get loaded because of union. Is this true. Should it be a real consideration on which flatbed company to go with, or does Maverick get you plenty of miles to make up for the delays. Just something I thought I would ask to a Mav guy. Thanks

Guys complain about trucking being slow but man I'll tell ya... you are in one line of work I thank god I'm not in. And like every other person in america I almost did it a few years back. Took me over a year to sell my place and ended up lowering the pricealmost $60k just to get it moved.
That said, didn't Maverick stop taking people for school?
I just emailed the recruiter I was working with in december when I decided to try and stick it out at my job, that was a mistake. I told her I'd like to reactivate my application if possible. Still waiting to hear from from them, which is odd because the first time they were contacting me within an hour or submitting it. still hasn't been long, just since last night but mabey that does indicate a slowing down in there freight if they are not in a hurry to hire -
Well I hope things are going better for u guys than It is me. This was supposed to be my last week at work and I was supposed to start school on March 3. Well the woman from the career center called Monday morning and told me that the state put a freeze on funds to assist with cdl training. Needless to say I'm pissed. I had my two weeks put in at work, got my permit, and was schedueling my dot physical and drug test this week, she told me I was good to go and the woman at the college had a spot reserved for me. Not anymore! So I guess I can rent a truck at the college and hope to hell I pass or find somebody with truck and trailer that will let me practice and then try, or I can wait until the state pulls their head out of their *** I have talked to a couple of my buddies that have their class a, and they think I should just go and rent a truck. I'm not worried about driving, I drive a truck with a 10 speed everyday, I've backed up plenty of 24 ft gooseneck trailers(I used to pull one one with two mollasses tanks on it when I delivered liquid feed) thats a big difference from a 53 foot trailer though. I know the bigger trailer is easier to back up, but I have never tried before. They seem to think I won't have anything to worry about, I don't know I would like to try it before I go try the test. Anybody have any thoughts or advice I'm still on the list at Mav, so I don't have to worry about that, my recruiter told me to just keep her informed. Oh I forgot to mention the reason why the state froze the funding. the woman from the career center told me that people were having a hard time finding a job after they graduated! WHAT! This is the transportation industry were talking about! I don't understand. Sorrry I rambled I needed to get it out.
