I'm 29 living in Ohio. I drive dry van for Werner, when I get to a year of experience I'll be moving on to flatbed. Been looking at Maverick, are they a good company to get experience? Also do they haul different types of freight (lumber, coils, pipes, vehicles, glass, boats, etc). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

They haul pretty much anything. Don't go to glass. They make it sound better with higher CPM but you get much less mileage compared to other divisions.
Why wait a year? Maverick will hire with 0 experience. Unless you have a contract with Werner.
Also, if you do go work for them try to avoid company yards as much as possible.
Their flatbed securement training is top notch.
When I worked there they tried to get the flatbed drivers home for a minimum of 34hrs every weekend. Glass drivers got 2-3 days usually.
The longer you decide to stay out though will make them more likely to give you longer trips. On CPM pay you want the longest trips you can get with the least number of load/unloads.motocross25, MJ1657 and BruceWayne911 Thank this. -
Search Dale Clay on YouTube. He details his daily life with maverick. I drive for melton and I'm happy. Maverick seems like a good company and good training and equipment.

Thanks for the info. I was looking into glass just to learn securment. I'm waiting a year to show job stability on my resume. What do you mean by avoid company yards?Razororange Thanks this.

Does Melton have alot of freight options? What have you hauled?

You'll learn much better and variety of securement with standard flatbed. Glass on A-frames is always secured with 8 2" straps. That's it. 1 chain across the trip board at the front of each pack.
Avoid company yards because some of the employees there like to get all high and mighty. Their "Driver of the Month" or as they are more commonly called "Black Hats" tend to think they are better than every other driver because they were given a $20 hat and a piece of paper for doing their job. If they find something on your load that isn't to their liking they will gladly throw you under the bus to make themselves look better instead of offering advice to you personally.
I was fired from Maverick because I had a disagreement with the VP of Equipment. It all happened because I chose to park at the HQ instead of the truck stops down the street. If I hadn't parked there the disagreement wouldn't have happened and I would've probably worked there for a couple more months at least.Orangees, TripleSix, snowman_w900 and 5 others Thank this. -
I would think they'd WANT you on their yard instead of a truck stop
-
Well, that gives management the opportunity to do stupid ####, like pull you off your long load to give you some short garbage run that someone else didn't feel like delivering.TripleSix, snowman_w900, DDlighttruck and 2 others Thank this.

Besides that incident you had with them, how were they overall as a company? How did they treat you as a driver? Also does Maverick haul stepdeck and lowboy?

Melton is a lot like maverick. We also have "blue knights" that like to look at your load to see if they can chime in. Funny. Corporate motivation stuff meant to achieve more and become a better driver-team member Yada yada yada. Ya we haul a lot of different stuff. Personally I enjoy new challenges. I like glass. I like steel coils. I like to see new places and learn.. Today Ive got a deck full of apple wood from Washington orchards going to Texas to become BBQ wood. Cool huh? Melton will start you at a similar pay as maverick. But that Dale Clay guy in you tube sure seems to get a lot of home time because he lives near their headquarters. Maybe you do too. Both companies have cameras in can just FYI. That never bugged me.
