Use the off duty driving line aswell after you get unloaded to go wherever you need to. It won't stop your 14 but your next set of 14 will be available sooner.

If you use it after getting loaded then you are asking for trouble though.

I think everyone and their mom does that little trick on the eld but hey maybe you didn't know and now you do.

Edit in your on duty times. 30 for pre or post combined with fuel hk 3 min for drop hk 5 for fuel.

You are making it sound ore complicated than it is. Application can take getting used to as far as when to use or when not to use. Otherwise it's simple math. A full break to reset 14-hour clock is 10 hours. That break can be legally split in 2 with the longer portion of the break being logged as sleeper berth and being at least 7 hours. The shorter portion of the break may be logged in any off duty status -- or a combination of multiple off duty statuses and must be at least 2 hours. At the onset of a split break, upon selecting split sleeper option on ELD, 14-hpur clock is paused for the duration of the break. 14-hour clock resumes upon any on duty status being logged. A split break may be started with either the shorter or longer portion of the break first. Once 14-hour clock is paused and restarted, it cannot be paused again. Admittedly, how much of one's 14-hour clock remains after completing a split, I have yet to take the time to learn to calculate. All of that basically just says take two breaks adding up to at least 10 hours with one period being at least 2 hours and a sleeper berth period being at least 7 hours.

Running reefer, I do splits all the time. Sometimes I start a split in anticipation of needing it, but then find myself able to get a full 10 in. If I didn't do splits when finding myself detained at shippers and receivers, I wouldn't find myself averaging 2800-2900 miles/week. PC is a great tool, too.

It can stop 14, if selecting split sleeper on ELD. Or, if already off duty with split sleeper selected, PC off duty is a qualifying off duty status for keeping 14 paused. It also prevents losing whatever off duty time has been put into that 10-hour break.

Yeah I normally take at least 2 off duty to load (when possible), that way I only take 8 off later. How can it be difficult your ELD will compute it all as long as you take, and I show it in the sleeper.

Pretty much accurate. But there's how the split works. Then there's how a company chooses to implement a split and how a particular ELD brand chooses to provide the feature and functionality to log a split.

For example some companies don't permit a split at all. Others require that the short break be in the sleeper. Not how it works, but thats the policy the company chooses in order to use split sleeper.

Now my ELD doesn’t require me to select split sleeper. After 2 hours off duty my 14 automatically pauses. I have to show the required time in the sleeper on my long break. I can elect to take the minimum time in the sleeper to satisfy the split or I can take the whole ten or more. Regardless, the 14 was paused when I took the short break.

If I take multiple breaks the 14 hour pause start automatically defaults to whichever of the short breaks is longest.

Bottom line, given all the variations and different interpretations of how to implement split sleeper, the best thing a driver can do is get with their safety department to understand how thier company chose to implement split sleeper.

There were lots of times when 15 minutes ODND was followed by a lengthy period Off Duty back in the paper log days before the 14 hour rule took effect.

Yard move at shipper let’s you reset your drive hours without taking a 30. Between that and unloading in sleeper berth that’s like 3-5 hours saved a week. It adds up. Running split sleeper during breakdowns/delays can allow you to collect detention while gaining another 3-5 hours. Running splits also makes your times more consistent which gets you the longer runs.
