What is his concern in the first place? Is the engine running rough or something? Did the pump fail in such a way that he feels metal may have traveled to the injectors? We don't call for injectors when the pump is replaced.
He said based off of the noises it made and is making that metal is in fuel system. He basically refused to test injectors. It's not running rough at all but makes NO power. It struggled to bobtail to the shop 10 minutes away from the loves it was at. Do I need to make a trip there and find a new mechanic? Or is he trying to prevent a future failure bc of metal that he thinks is in the system
He is reverting to his Detroit DD13/15 pump failure replacement training where it is quite common for HPFP failure to send debris to injectors.
I would not replace any injectors until you experience a miss. Each injector does have a coarse screen on the inlet. Any metal that might have gotten into them is already there. If the high pressure pump has a catastrophic failure on the high pressure side, they typically instantly fail and the engine quits, so metal never has a chance to get up there. Testing the injectors would be useless, either they are working properly or not. What codes are getting logged if any?
That's the exact words he used. He said that it's the same Bosch unit that's on the dd13/15. @Heavyd it did miss under acceleration right after the fuel pump went out when I had a load on it. But when I was bobtailing no missing and when idling no missing. I wish I was with him for codes, but I had to get in my back up truck to keep running. He hasn't hooked up a computer at all and tested anything. He's backed up. I'll update as soon as I know something. Also I didn't tell him it was missing because I thought it was a symptom of the pump. So he's assuming the injectors or trashed before hooking up a computer and testing ANYTHING.
Pull the fuel filter(s) Look closely at filters and in filter bowl for metal shavings. Listen to HeavyD. If mechanic wanted to follow DD procedure exactly, he would be pulling fuel tanks and steaming insides along with replacing all fuel lines......
I think he is just trying to cover his rear but blindly throwing six injectors at it without cause could be a huge waste of your money. He sounds unconfident and is now pushing you off. Might be time to find a different shop. These are computer controlled engines and anyone trying to diagnose without at least checking for codes first is always a red flag.
I know is hard to say with no codes but you might have an idea why our truck keeps dying? We changed our fuel pump and fuel filters checked on electrical wires, power is ok but not as strong as it should be...
