I just bought a 2012 international 4400 with the maxxforce dt in it. Has 52,000 miles. 5spd Allison trans. Thing felt fine when I test drove it. Would do 70-75 mph no problem. Got it home, hooked up my 40’ flatbed gooseneck and the thing wouldn’t do 55mph floored with the trailer empty. Was blowing black smoke out the exhaust and it has the DPF system. Also getting the diesel exhaust smell pretty bad in the cab. No fault codes, all filters are new, turbo boots are good and can’t see anything cracked or wrong with the intercooler. Any ideas?
Maxxforce DT (466) low power

For the exhaust smell check the Exhaust back pressure valve/down pipe sometimes on those the pipe on the outlet of the EBPV is hard to get to seal off
Check the boost control tubes there is one that runs from the intake throttle valve adapter over the valve cover to the boost control solenoid which is mounted on the pipe between the low and high pressure turbos all of the boost control tubes are connected there make sure none of them are broken.
Is it a High horsepower DT? If it is it will have an additional intercooler on the valve cover, also check that the IMP sensor or the bore it is mounted in is clogged with soot, it’s in the intake manifold it is a 3 wire sensor the 2 wire beside it is manifold temp, also check to see if it has been converted to open crankcase system. If it hasn’t been done there will be about a 3/4-1” hose attached to the 90* air inlet elbow at the low psi turbo, if it hasn’t there is a good possibility the turbos are coked, and not all serial number engines are allowed to be converted. Worth checking into. If it hasn’t been I would recommend it, even though it’s somewhat pricey on the front end.shogun and FlaSwampRat Thank this. -
Thanks for the reply Navtech. Yes it has the extra intercooler on top of the valve cover. When I first got the truck I did find the vacuum hose end was broke that runs from the throttle valve over to the other side. I fixed it but didn’t notice any change. I will check this other stuff as well. Is there by chance a YouTube video or something explaining how to convert over to an open crankcase system?

Have you tried a parked regen? You said you have done 70mph so it should have done it on its own but maybe for some reason it hasn't. I have had some Cummins engines years back that needed a forced regen even tho they got highway time. Low power, smoke, and your eyes would burn like crazy from the bs. Not saying that is 100% your problem buy it doesn't hurt to try before taking it somewhere or starting to throw parts at it.

Well come to find out the truck has already had the open crankcase conversion. Went ahead and cleaned both turbos again, had a guy come check it with his laptop. Said everything was great, builds to 35psi boost, ipc’s? Look good and no codes or faults at all... but it still rolls black smoke anytime your on the throttle hard and the thing shifts way early... so I’m stumped..

If you see black smoke, your DPF is toast. Some black smoke is normal at hard acceleration, you just don't see it much anymore because of DPFs. Are you still experiencing low power?

Yes well I think it’s low power. Truck shifts early st around 1900 rpms as well. Have to shift it manually to gain speed loaded.
