Well if you are trying to get back on your feet then I guess having a job is better then not having a job.
That being said I worked for this company and even got a friend of mine to hire on as a trainee. He made it a year almost to the day yet said to me looking back he should of quit after 6 months like I did because the last 6 months there was a waste of time with all the layovers he had.
He got starved out and I quit because I just had to put to many hours in to get average miles and spent a lot of time getting equipment fixed and sitting on unpaid docks (they don't pay detention till after 4 hours on a dock) I pent most of my free time at May trying to get another job because after about a month I new I would not be staying their for that long.
In the 6 months I worked their I made nothing for detention pay, which I had plenty of, very little for layover pay because of how they dispatch you to avoid paying it (pu a load on Friday that del mon 700 miles away type of stuff) No shop pay/breakdown pay, And had 2 run twice the loads of the average otr carrier to get the same miles. One seven day period did 10 loads under 200 miles.
So if you are just looking to get into a truck and happy to have a job then May is not that bad. But if you are serious about making money when you are away from home for weeks at a time, May ain't it.
You can come here and say this guy or that guy said this or that but believe me, I have no axe to grind and left May on my own accord. This company does not have the freight nor the right kind of customers to keep you rolling and making money. Lots of grocery whses and back burner freight which take lots of hours to pu and del unpaid.
Now if you don't go home and live out of your truck and count your weekend layovers at the yards away from home as time off then you might have a chance at average income with some tweaks of your log book. But Crete or John Christner income? Forget about it.

Well Cethern, If you wish to work for them then good luck. I drove for them for 5 yrs. Everything I say about them is the truth. They will flat out lie to your face. And the term mng in Denver <Danny Boyd> is the worst for that. I know first hand how bad they are. They where a really good company at one time. But now they have so many stupid rules and they want to micro mng the truck. Any good experienced driver would be better off driving for anyone else but them. But if you wish to give them a try then good luck. you are going to need it.
RBPC Thanks this. -
I would like to add ro this post that the two biggest liars ever involved with May are bugblue and now apparantly Kbar.
I was in the oreintation right after BigRay and have felt very comfortable with May. As a rule its the non conformist and cowboys that dont do well at May. It is not for everyone.
I would like to mention that we fuel at pilots and ta's. Maybe once a day, not close to twice, depending on your location. We do not have to chain anytime it snows. Company policy states you only chain to get to a safe place. I have only chained once this year and that was over Donner and I had a student with me. It was going to snow for the next week so we hunkered down that evening, chained and hauled off the hill the next day.
Godd luck to you all in oreintation next week. Maybe I will get by and say hello. Im out of P-cola and usally head that way out of the house. -
well Hank you are right. Free thinking drivers who do not need to be told every little thing to do should not work for MAY. Drivers with more then a year should not work for May. And you better read the company rules again. I have 2 friend who still drive for May out of Payette and they keep me informed on there stupid rules. Just last Thursday they sent out a Quallcomm msg that said it IS company police for all trucks to chain when there is snow on the road. They just let 2 drivers go last week for not doing this. Ofcouse thats if some yahoo in brooks doesn't decide that the road a 1000 miles away is to dangerous to drive on and shuts you down. Like he knows.
So take your 6 months of experience and drive on.RBPC Thanks this. -
Kbar! Lets just tell it like it is. You are bitter with May and anyone who is making a living working there. My only problem with your attitude is that you think it is the only correct one. When in fact it was most likely your demise!
Every oraganization, heck, every society has rules. Some just cant live with them. You base everything that happens at May with your experience and that of a couple of your buds. Well Im hear to refute that along with some of my friends.
Bottom line is there are always to sides to every story. -
Well come on Hank, start refuting! Ya better get what you say, IN WRITING! The "story" is not believable, for either side of the coin, if you can't get it in writing. Scan & post your truths! Like I said, I mean both sides... -
I had a long talk with an old friend that works for May, I asked him about this chain policy he stated that May wants you to chain when the "CHAIN LAW IS IN PLACE"
This will be one of my questions while I'm in Orientation next week, Seeing how this is not my first BBQ I have a very good idea how some "drivers" can or can not fit in with a company's policy's, having been on both sides of the Qualcom.
Oh and Hank thank you for the info on the fueling -
And I made a living there. Did 3000+ miles every week. Just got tired of some idiot in the office who has never been in a truck much less ever driven one telling me how I should drive it. I can drive circles around May and it's slow trucks with there rookies training rookies. -
There is a reason they started training drivers and have newbies training newbies I suspect.
I never had a problem with their rules. Being x military I know all about rules. All I know is when I worked their they could not keep me on the road enough for my liking and starved my friend from CA out.
Like I said before, You can roll the dice but snake eyes will come up more then 7's at this company. A company that small should not need to depend on training newbies to keep the seats filled. And because they do tells you a lot about the company.Last edited: Feb 23, 2009
