I'm oldsaltie24... I'm 67... Was in trucking for 25-26 years... Worked 15 in hauling swinging, boxed, tubs, and barrels of meat... Then 4 years as a company driver with Schneider... Two years hauling milk & ice cream, which just about killed me... Finally was an O/O for Schneider for a while & ended up with Jachobson out of Iowa before retiring and selling truck... Still like traveling... I like biking around where I live... Love being home now with my wife of 45 years as of next month...oldsaltie24
Maybe I can help someone...

Is hauling milk as bad as everyone says it is? Do you really have to run illegal a majority of the time?
-
Not only milk haulers, but bull haulers, meat haulers, fruit & produce haulers, & some others & even regular haulers run illegal... When I hauled meat, it wasn't nothing to be running up 46-50 hours without sleep,(single driver)... Things have to be moved quickly & time is limited... DOT will never be able to stop it completly... Most that do run ilegal know how to get around scales & DOT stops... It's a gamble & sometimes you win & sometimes you loose... Now days the fines are much higher... So it's up to the driver, but if you don't want to get the product there when then want, then they will find someone who will get the job done...
Even working for BIG companys, I've ran illegal... Some, not all the time though... -
Sorry, I didn't answer your first part... Hauling milk in tankers are a whole lot differant than vans... Milk, or any liquid doesn't stop just because you break... Liquids can take you through lights because of the slussing around with the forward & backward motion of the liquid...

I know things happen but I really want to have a clean record. There is a place in town that is hiring immediately for milk haulers. I'm still a newbie and they say it's not a problem. It would be nice to get the tanker experience but the illegal stuff is what is turning me off. I don't want to put myself in a bad situation
, so I'm looking into it as a last resort. They told me I would be paid $125 per load during training. After training, I would be on probation for 90 days. I would be paid 28 cpm empty and 32 cpm loaded. After 90 days, I would be paid 30 cpm empty and 34 cpm loaded. I could earn an additional $15 if I load the milk. No chance of vacation until after 15 months
. What do you think?

no, I have not hauled milk. Just got a couple guys I know and from talking with them.
Plan on working 24/7/365.
Their issue and why they left milk was the burn-out. Cows are milking regardless of what you want to do. And the rancher wants/needs the space so you had best get it out of there for him.
And god help you if you should force him to dump a days milking from not making a pickup.
As I said. Just what was relayed to me and why I never got into it. -
My question - WHY If they are paying sooo good - - Why are they having a hard time getting people to work ??? See anything here ??? I'm hoping your light bulb is flashing...
-
Those are pretty poor pay rates.
Pretty much late 80/ early 90 pay rates.
