That's poor advice with the industry the way it is now . Many are lucky to get hired at all . If they quit after being briefly employed they just lessened their chances of getting another job . It's not true at all bad info you here about companies is almost always from somebody that got fired . Many have quit after finding the recruiters at the company and driving school lied about potential earnings among other things .

Most of the bigger companies will hire fresh newbies before experienced drivers (that's no lie because they told me that over the phone)because they're cheaper and they can collect school money from them.

To me that's putting greed before safety and experience.

Swift will charge nothing for my schooling as long as we work for them for 6 months. Not one thin dime. I didn't even pay the non refundable fee at the beginning of school.

I work for a fleet owner with about 50 employees . Because of very low turnover the average driver age is well above 40 . Because of that and the small number of employees annual healthcare costs are huge . Some of our drivers have had minor incidents that most carriers would use for an excuse to get rid of them and bring in younger , cheaper drivers . Our boss is a driver with many years of experience and has his share of mishaps . He's very forgiving .

And the same goes with accidents. They get a bad rap and are lumped in with Schneider drivers when it comes to safety. If you compare the Apollo Program missions in the 60s and 70s, they had 1 accident out of 18 or so missions. The space shuttle has had 2 accidents. Which one is more unsafe? You'd automaticly think the shuttle cause they've had 2 accidents, when in fact, the shuttle has had about 135, so the shuttle averages one accident every 65-70 missions, where as Apollo had 1 for every 18-20.

Ducks is not kidding. Best advice i can give you is make sure you have a cb in your truck but only turn it on when "YOU NEED" to use it. Otherwise you could get your feelings hurt. Even if your the best driver on the road the letters on your truck get you made fun of. Just dont pay it any mind. I don't. I've been with them 6 months.

Thanks everyone for the information! I understand about all the bad stuff they say about Swift but of course everyone says that about every company but I'm not worried about that I'm just going to do what needs to be done and take care of myself and my family.

    Again thanks for the info!

Now I've only been out here a few days but so far I've not had anything said to us ugly. I'm sure that I've frustrated a few drivers by going only 55 in CA but well.........hmmmmmmmmmm...that's the speed limit.

In fact, every time I've needed over, or needed a lane change .........if another truck was behind me, they'd give me a break.

Maybe there's a big "help me I'm new and I bake cookies" sign on the back of my trailer?

    *goes to look*

no. Guess it's just nice people out there.
