I'm relatively new to working in nd. My experience here has been similar to when I went to the Alaskan fields decades ago. Once your there ... you talk to others...observe and it's pretty easy to move into similar job with conditions that work better for you.
For me....the ability to customize my time off...clean, warm individual housing within walking distance to my truck...having my own truck...is a larger consideration then wage.
Once your here...and proven as a dependable hand that others can work around, you can get a job that works for you in all regards.
It's changed radically in the year I've been here....but I still make good money ...drive good equipment and the fact that it's slow some days isn't all bad if you like your housing and don't resent being away from home.
Tons of layoffs and a lot of them are well qualified..good hands but the oilfield will always have a semi transient workforce....I'm an old guy so i tend to ramble a bit...you know yourself better than anyone on a forum....if you tend to be good natured and roll with the punches...if leaving home isn't going to cause a big hardship...come on out. If you lean towards being angry when things don't seem to make a lot of sense??
Co workers can really affect your experience.....I lucked into a company that hires reasonable people versus superstars and it makes thing much more pleasant.
One other note.....there's slick roads....fog...wind...and low temps....and this has been a very mild winter as well as my first....you hear a lot of talk about throwing iron etc. I wouldn't let any of that dissuade you. I'm 60.....haul on tough leases....chain up several times a day....no big.AC22 Thanks this. -
Was just out there with them for a year and a half. It was a good place to work but a bad market now to work in.
Im wont say dont go, but do take into account the unintended expenses of living and working there.
Doctors and Dentist are busy and you are a just another worker, flights in and out of ND are expensive over 500 dollars roundtrip, groceries and services are expensive, takes a week for mail to arrive, expensive to mail out, oil change is 60 dollars, and police are militant.
Most people who had a house hold to care for have left already (not enough hrs to support the distance). Those who are sticking around have their families there or are single. Some people move their families there and dont have enough money to move back home.
I had a good job but was tired of waking up everyday wondering if this was the day oil dropped to 20 dollars a barrel. It still seems to be going that direction. As well as seeing all the friends I made leave or paying to much for inferior services.
Id say wait for the price to come up if they ever do.
The hedges are running out and no one is reinvesting so, until then they are just looking for warm bodies. -
All good info here!!!
MBI is a safe way to go !! They get jobs handed down from Slawson Exploration, and Halliburton and Chevron etc etc, Most smaller haulers get work from MBI...They pay a little less, but you get more job security..Smart way to go, right now
I did some water hauling for them 2012 winter, stayed in a target logistics man camp that was awesome..
Almost bought a truck to lease on with them, but the contact for that program confused me with endless details and red tape so i never pursued the idea.. -
