Up in Canada(point compass north) We have free Wifi at every McDonalds(That I've been to, anyways). It's ISP is Bell, but works not too bad from the parking lot but you obviously have to be reasonably close to the building for it to work.

McD's has a router in the office instead of an external antenna. That's why the signal ain't that great outside.
wififreespot.com and openwifispots.com have large lists. I have parked on ramps before and borrowed it off motels to check something quick.
Last time I lived in an apartment I had broadband but could pick up a dozen or so signals. Some people ain't too bright when it comes to security. Most truck drivers are the few times I've checked signals in the parking lots. -
the McDonalds in the Summerville, SC Pilot "Travel Center" the free wifi does not work INSIDE (plus only about 4 parking spaces)
the McDonalds inside the Corbin, KY Pilot
the Mcdonalds inside the Newberry, SC Loves
There have been a few more but after these three I just stopped writing down where McDonald's wifi didn't work in truck stops coming to the conclusion that most likely Ronald McDonald is in cahoots with pilots and loves by offering $#!tty wifi at these big chain truck stop locations so that you can spend your hard earned trucker money on the pricey wifi at these truck stops. In all fairness though I HAVE found free wifi in a McDonalds inside a Love's truck stops but that has only been ONCE. So if you have the locations where free McDonald's wifi works IN Love's or Pilot's truck stops, please share. -
airforce, the list goes on and on. Many of the mangers don't have a clue how to reset a modem and router after a thunderstorm. I've probably helped a dozen or so over the years reset their equipment. They'll call a technican for such a simple thing and it turns into a 3 month repair.
airforcetoo Thanks this. -

As with any "free" wi-fi that you may find, it is typically metered, and by the time you get in to use it to check email or the weather, they (the actual network provider) has it turned down to a trickle.
This day in age of 4G and recently 4G-LGE devices with sharing capability and reasonable data rates, the wireless data speeds that are readily available, make it impractical in many situations to waste time looking for free wifi that is so hit and miss. -
