The flywheel tool is just a ground off 3/8" bolt that goes through the flywheel housing and locates in a hole in the flywheel to get the timing position. On my 3408, should be same as 3406
Mechanical CAT, smoke at idle

Cleveland Bros. Cat in Turbotville PA. Curious only: where are you in NY? not that any of it is any good any more.
zx150 Thanks this. -
Like I said, 3408 but mechanical 3406 should be same.
Edit: don't ask me why there's 2 pics but atm busy in the shop changing an airbag.
Edit again: The plate covers the hole for the crankshaft turning tool. The hole marked 14 is where the timing tool for TDC goes.Last edited: Nov 18, 2016

Thank you for the wealth of info! You've refreshed my memory about the timing pins. I went and bought them both from CAT before I realized I could have made them myself. The short pin goes in the hole near the fuel pump and the big one goes back by the starter. The flywheel turning tool is a glorified hand crank starter.
I'm going to leave the timing adjustments to the pros. I never could get it dialed in right in the past.
Turbotville is about 3 hours down the road. I'll give Cleveland brothers a shout. We are near Binghamton and have always used Milton CAT in Kirkwood. Great shop, great bunch of guys but they haven't worked on these engines in a long, long time, aside from ours!snowman_w900 and Ozdriver Thank this. -
Are you dead idling or putting the revs up around 1000? The older C-15's in our fleet smoke either when the gaskets are leaking or the idle is left at 700. Our mechanic tells me white smoke is mixed with coolant, blue smoke is oil and black smoke is obviously too much diesel.
A proper running diesel motor isn't supposed to smoke at all.MACK E-6 and cumminskid123 Thank this. -
Same deal here, full mechanical 3406c serial #3zj that smokes just like yours at idle. It runs smooth and smoke free under load. I've pin timed this thing a dozen times, tried advancing also. I have 30k on a IPD overhaul and a rebuilt pump, timing advance and injectors. Does anyone do a good job meter timing in central Illinois
-
Sounds like timing is bumped up. Half a hole on the pump is all you need. Also make sure the timing advance is working properly. I had one that was bumped too high. Ran like a raped ape, but cracked 5 of my six pistons.
