What does a medical exam entail in order to get a med card?
What will they disqualify you for and how picky are they?
If you wear glasses for distance and they correct your vision to legal standards can you still become certified ?

Yes if the glasses will let you read the letters on the screen and color blindness test, Its all in the green safety book that you can buy at most truck stops.

If you can see the eye chart and distinguish red from green you can pass the eye exam. Heck if you accidentally studied the very few different eye charts available from medical supply web sites and then accidentally memorized the 20/20 and 20/30 lines you might pass while looking the wrong way around.Johnnymic7 Thanks this.

Picky about blood pressure & sugar level.

You need to be acuity of something like 20/40 or better in each eye. Corrected or not.
I use a lense that correct one eye to something like 10/5 or lower, they cannot measure that "Low" or sharp. I should transfer that lense to my new frames. Other eye has a lense replacement implant so it's fixed. That one is good to 24 inches which happens to be the front sight of my colt. But that's beside the point, Trifocals correct for distance well enough.
There is a chart given to you at 20 feet or so. There is a line you must read to pass and get it right during the DOT exam. Being the crazy man I was in my time I used to read off the lower smallest letters they had and then work on the copyright in fine print at the very bottom. he he he. Im so bad.
They can be picky. So if you have a good eye surgeon, (Not your average 5.00 glasses shop examiner) you can challenge him to create a prescription to get close to zero as possible. That will give you many years of peace in future eye exams.
For cars you only need one eye. Trucks and Aviation, you need two.Johnnymic7 Thanks this. -
I just renewed mine today. As mentioned for the vision portion, I read the chart and had to recognize the colors red, green and yellow. She also checked peripheral vision. I was asked if I wear glasses or contacts and I assume that if I did I would be tested while wearing them.

What else was on the health exam? Blood work? EKG?
-
What if it's perfectly fine corrected with proper meds...blood pressure I mean
-
That's ok; many truck drivers have blood pressure problems and use meds. The doctor will give you a 1 yr. card vs. a 2 yr. card is the only difference.Last edited: May 5, 2017

Only needs to be corrected to 20/40 or better. If you can do that it doesn't matter what your uncorrected numbers are.
I'm 20/200 in one eye, but I can correct to 20/20 with glasses or contacts. I stopped driving full-time in 2006, but I've needed a DOT card for my job since then anyway.
