Do you need to carry copies of your medical papers/examination with you when you drive? It doesn't seem to make sense as that info is in the DMV. Of course the insurance is in the DMV too but cops can't seem to access that either.

Yes. They want the long form on you. Here in Ohio they only scan the medical card, not the long form.

No law saying you have to have the long form on you. Back before the days when your physical was tied to your license and you had to carry proof of certification, I carried the card in my wallet with my license (pull 'em both out together) and kept the long form safely stowed with my other paperwork, so that IF my wallet went missing, I could tell an officer my license number so he could verify that my license is valid and I could show the long form which indicates a 2-year certification.

Like I said, though, these days the state has your medical card and it's tied to your CDL. You're no longer required to carry proof, because you've already provided it to the state. That means you don't HAVE to carry the card, and you've never had to carry the long form.

Like I said, i always did, too, because it was good proof you were indeed medically certified if you lost your wallet. Now that the state already has it, they don't need to check it on the side of the road, so it really doesn't matter if you carry it or not.

    CrappieJunkie Thanks this.

It's a recent thing...well, recent to me. Last year, the state sent me a warning about how if I allow my medical card to expire, my A instantly becomes a C. Two year card. The previous card's expiration date didn't produce a warning from the state.

I keep the long form, but they havent asked for it in a DOT inspection in a few yrs.

I just redid mine. They didn't give me any card. Said they don't do that anymore? Only gave me a long form.

The long form is invalid 14 days after issue according to the FMCSA. This gives the state the time to log in the new information. You should be in compliance with this and have self certified with your state.

I have to find the reference again.
