Chompi, CondoCruiser,
Thank you so much for your encouraging words. I am not about to "lie" to anyone to get a job, one, it isn't who I am and two, makes no sense to do it.
I cannot hide the fact that I had surgery and do not intend on leaving that information out. I was just wondering if some companies see that as a disqualifying factor. Hearing from others here makes me feel better about it.
I was just checking my pressure this evening and it is almost in the normal range. It depends on what I was doing just before I take it. I am only on a small dosage of medicine for it now and may need to have it increased.
If I am on the medicine, and it is considered Stage I Hypertension, is it considered by DOT to be "Out of Control"? I was looking at the questions on their web site and was wondering just how much of a stickler they can be?
Thank you all for your replies.

Be honest and you'll be fine. I had to list the 9 surgeries I've had in the last 5 years and had no problems because of it. At worst they'll ask you for a release to work note from your doctor.

OregonSNOB, I had similiar questions about Blood Pressure and never could get a straight answer. I think from all my responses that it depends on your carrier. Here is what I found out:
1. If you are over 140/90 you can get 1 year or 3 months depending on who you work with to get it under control.
2. If you are already on meds you need to be 139/89 or lower or you will be sent home.
3. If you take meds to control it you will only get a 1 year medical card (instead of a 2 year card).
Hope this helps....OregonSNOB Thanks this. -
OregonSNOB, you should never lie on the forms where it asks about past surgeries. This will always come back to bite you in the rear! I have had a few surgeries in my past that has only one time prohibited me from getting a driving job. I broke my back in six places, along with many other bones in a motorcycle wreck in 2000. I also had my ACL replaced in my left knee in 2007 and two years later had the same knee replaced. Neither of the two knee surgeries have prevented me getting a job, and the back injury has only prevented me from getting a job with JB Hunt (Thankful for that, I might add). The key thing is to be pro-active and go to your doctor and get a form from them that states that you have been under their care, and that you have no restrictions or limitations due to past surgeries.
Now the BP might be a concern, but working with your doctor about this is your best bet. Once this is under control, you should be good to go. I hope that this helps.
PS, congratulations on beating the cancer!! Happy Turkey Day!OregonSNOB Thanks this. -
Gold Miner,
Thank you for your reply and for the information. I am hoping that I can get it under control through some exercise and be off medications before I attend Trucking School.
Since that is still a few months away, I think that I should be able to do that. I could stand to lose a few pounds anyway and that will help with the blood-pressure issue as well.

Just be advised some carriers won't hire drivers with a 1 year medical card simply because they are too cheap to pay for the physical every year instead of every 2 .
This is the standard physical form . http://www.iowadot.gov/mvd/omve/medicalreport.pdf
