I agree about the larger displacement, although the 12.7 series 60 is an excellent engine as far as reliability and economy. As long as your not pulling really heavy (90000 or more) even the 470hp version has great power. The Mercedez MBE 4000 is actually 12.8 liters. And have you seen the new Detroit DD15 engine? I believe its 14.7 liters , but it has ratings all the way to 560hp and 1850 tq. Pretty cool!

If I start a fleet of company trucks I would probably go with Freightliners with Detroit power.

We are testing eight 2007 Freightliner trucks with the MBE 4000 Mercades engines. Trucks have around 200.000 miles on them now, have had very few problems.....three had fuel leaks at the start.....Freightliner repaired all of them. Very little down time with these engines and no problems with the EGRs.

What was it the fuel rails?

tere is a bg difference in detroit and mercedes... One is silver the other is green, come on!
Actually the mercedes has a nice flat torque curve but does seem down on power compared to other motors of similar size. They are expensive, even the oil filters. The one we got had oil leaking from every fitting on it when we got it, fl fixed them all. within 200k every injector had been replaced (in two different shop visits, one was replaced twice) I've always compared the MB engine brake to opening the window and sticking your hand out. Between the weak engine brake and how quiet it is you can actually have it on and not know it.
I'm weird, I like detroits. good fuel economy and they are a solid motor if you take care of them. I'v had good luck with all except one and that one tore up motor mounts left and right and spit out the crank. eventually after two weeks at the factory diagnosing it they noticed it was putting over 500hp to the ground and this was back in the first year or two of the series 60 production when the highest rated motor you could get was 430hp at the flywheel. The rest of the motor wasn't up to that much power, someone messed up programing the ecm from the factory. then again it spoiled detroits for the rest of my life since we thought they all were supposed to run like that! -
I thought Cat was on there way out by 2010, I haven't heard any good things about that Acert

If you haul in the mountains, stay away as many others as said. I personaly would much rather have a Detroit than a Mercedes for HP and Torque reasons. Take a look and see how many Mercedes are on there compared to Detroits. While a good spec'd Mercedes may yield good mpg, the detroit will not work as hard when working in the mountain range.

I have a mbe in a 2005 columbia with 416000 miles on it. 1 turbo at 110000 miles , 2 EGR system overhauls in the last 2 year. other than that no big problems. as for the engine brake you need to spin it up to 2300 RPMs per the owners manual to get the full braking power, pulling a van my mpg for the year to date is 6.63, not bad but not good

I've been grumbling about being on so many different trucks in the past week on a new job. Everything from 18 wheelers, to dump truck and cement trucks. So far all in all I've been on 5 different trucks in less than a week. Can't get used to any of them making short runs. Saturday I was on a cement truck with a MBE, (Sterling). What a piece of junk. New truck and can't get it to move. Yesterday I was on a different cement truck International and no, didn't have time to see what it had, but what a relief to be back on truck that runs and shifts well.
