I have driven a Western Star 4964FX with 76" sleeper, 450 horsepower MBE 4000, 13 speed, and 3.58 diffs. I have to assume that the 450 horse rating is a guess, 'cuz this thing had trouble getting out of its own way. Pulling grades? I have driven a Volvo 425 that I had to shift less. Their "Turbo Brake" or exhaust brake? What a joke!

I do not normally slam products on this board, but Mercedes engines + Class 8 truck = PITA.

Give me the same truck with a DD15 or S60 ANY day.

Since I didn't see anybody mention it in this tread.

Detroit Diesel is owned by Mercedes.

Yes the Mercedes engine did not work well for the north american market which is why there is a whole slew of new DD engines on the way.

I was toying with a columbia on my last trip back through new mexico, oh what fun that was, the guy was practically bitting the steering wheel. I was letting him pass me up one hill then i just blew my smoke shield wide open and blinded the poor guy like he was sitting still.

Yes it had a mercedes motor, atleast thats what it said on the side.

    Remember YELLOW POWER!!!!!!!!!

Well, here at Roehl the Mercedes seems to perform better than the Detroits--at least on pulling hills. The exhaust brake is a joke. I had one fuel leak, just a small hole in a hose, otherwise it just keeps on running. Of course, I have no idea how either motor performs stock, just how Roehl sets them.

the only thing wrong with the Mercedes engine is the EGR system. sooner or later they will get it right. it's lighter than most other engines by 900 lb. no you will not be the 1st to the top of the hill, if you read the owners manual on how to use the engine brake and gear down to the proper speed you will have no problems on any grade. I've gone down parleys summit with 46,000 lb. you must go slower than with a jake and spin the engine to 2300 to get the full braking, you can go 2400 for a short time if you need to. I don't know if the mbe 4000 will be available after 2010

The detroit diesel DD13 will be released spring of 2009 and take the place of the mbe4000 which will fade out for 2010.
