Is it Mercer's private board or someone else's?
Am I correct in my understanding that you have to wait to be offered loads or can you call agents or search on a board yourself also? I'm considering leasing on at Mercer but don't really like the idea of having to just sit and wait for someone else to find a load and offer it to me.

Both, is the answer to your question.
If you don't mind little more paper-work, get your own authority. You can pull almost every load out there, for the acception of the "not to be brokered" loads.
Ex: TX had almost 2x as many loads available than what mercer had available. If you don't like to kiss up/down, run as the real o/o and not leased onto anyone. You might be able to find your OWN customers this way as well=$x,xxx in your pocket per good run. There is no pump discount or may be no national tire account, this way, but, you'll bee a lot better off, money wise. Also, don't forget your paperwork anywhere and keep everything updated, no one will do it for you
But, you, if you are not leased onto any1. If you are new to the o/o game, lease On 1st. Unless, your ego is big and your balls are to heavy then, strike out by your self.

If you want home time, consider local bulk carriers - tanker/hazmat. Money is good and home time is not bad. Your choice.
I gave you my Point of view and from the comparison of the mercer
Board and the "national" board. There are a bunch of them. Become member of them all and compare, some are
Alike, others are not, others have most of every load in it. I haven't tried them all, yet. By the way, if you'll go the van route, you'll be on the discounted beans and discolored rice - lol. -
That's how I've started out. Lost my patience in about 1month. -switched to the flat.

Do the math, figure out what you want and find the means to get it, and
    Go for it.

O yeah, west sux, have to wait your turn. Wait - I don't like. Ne and mid west are cool. West- you better scale 47k-50k if you want to get out of the west quick and cheap. You make $'s going west but, you make cents leaving it-if you dOnt want to wait. If you'll wait, you might make something . I don't like to wait nor loose money. If I'm not loaded within 2hr after my arrival, I ask for good detention pay, unless it's a steal mill- take out ur BBQ and start making your money that way there, if the pay is not there I usually have another load lined up by the diff. Agent and refuse the one that I'm at- happened few times and it wasn't pretty but, I'm out to make the money and not be "loaded". I can always be a reffeer/tanker. - almost does not happen.

    Questions? - ask.

    Think about it.

I'm going to try this one more time.
I've been in trucking for 30 years and running my own trucks for the past 15 years. I'm not interested in getting my own authority at this time.
Does Mercer have an internal private load board that their contractors can do load search's on and then call their coordinator or the agent and tell them to dispatch them on the load or do you have to go sit at a truck stop and wait for your coordinator to call and offer you loads?

    Yes

That is how I normally do it. Find a load I'm interested in, pre-select it on the board, and then call my coordinator. Sometimes I bypass him (he usually puts me on hold for 5+ minutes) and call the agent directly.

Whether I get the load or not depends on who/how many trucks are ahead of me, among other factors. You can see how many trucks are ahead of you on the board when you pre-select a load.

No, unless you choose to do so (eg, you don't have wireless connection, etc).

    You're welcome.

Thanks for the offer, but I don't think we have referral bonus (Maybe we do? I've never looked into it) Just passing the information along, just like Redd and Ms. Lil blue pony did to me when I was starting out.

    Good luck to you.
