No it can't. You can't shave a 1/4" or more of tread off of the side of an out of round tire and true it. You'll end up with no tread depth there and something that can't be balanced. The tire is junk.

Now if you are talking about shaving a few ten thousandths off of a tire that is round and has some very slight imperfections to it, of course that can be done. Lots of shops out there can true tires like that.

I'm talking about severely put of round tires that many times come that way brand new right from the manufacturer and they are junk. What I have in my situation is a junk out of round tire that cannot be shaved true. It's way beyond that.

I tried to save a little money buying Firestone steers recently. About 10k on them now and they are much louder than the Michelins I've always run. No other issues with them yet. $400 per tire vs. 550-600 for Michelins. I wish I could find someone that would discount Michelins a little bit but I guess they don't because they don't have to.

BF Goodrich (and unitoyal) is owned by Michelin. My tire rep claims the BFG highway control ( and the previous version the st244 tire) is the same casing as Michelin steers. I have 2 tires on my fleet, st244 and xza3s. Xza3s definitely wear slower, but are not as good on the ice and snow. For the $ I'd rather buy the st244s, and have newer rubber more often.

If you do not have a good tire guy. Truckersb2b.com will get you set up with decent national account pricing. I use them for all my michelin stuff ... can't ever get a 24.5 from a dealer that is sane on pricing ... always end up at loves or TA ...

I never had any luck with Michelin steers. I thought they seemed "slippery". I had much better luck with Bridgestone, for a lot less.

I run heavy up front so I wear tires out sooner than most and run 18 ply tires. My experience with the Michelin steers has been reasonably good, if midway through the tires life I dismount them, flip and place back on the same position due to the edges wearing prematurely. The last set of steers I bought my tire rep recommended Continental. He said fleets in my line of work are seeing 30,000 more miles than with the Michelin steers. He also recommended me to continue using Michelin on my drives and trailer as those normally wear even for the life of my tires. I also changed to a 3.25” offset flat faced wheel to get a wider stance. It seems to allow the tires to wear more evenly. With my carriers fleet discount I paid $384 a piece for the last Continental purchase. Roughly the same for my Michelin. 52153BF3-AC8E-4EF6-89BF-80F6254ECCE8.png 7FF6947A-8663-4E34-B6CD-AFEE48A14F31.png
