Midland VS Cobra witch is better for truckers orenthusiasts

Ever heard of either of these linears. Both are obviously a bit vintage. The Varmint is one I used until about 1995 with the 29LTD it's on, it was a talker back then but has been in a box since then. The G/Spot was given to me a couple of months ago, supposed to be a good talker but haven't tried it out yet.

Thinking about possibly putting one or both back in service, after having them gone through of course.

 

I'm not familiar with those other than randomly hearing the name mentioned once or twice.

I'd say they should be impressed with the performance of a magnet-mounted, three-foot antenna. I've got such a shorty on my sedan because it fits in my garage, and it, too, does yeoman's work that can be impressive.

I run a Cobra 19 with a little magnetic mount antenna in my pickup and I love it!

 

I would not buy a Cobra because they're made by a company in China with a lot of problems. Buy a Uniden 980 SSB /weather.

 

This Chinese Cobra 29 works quite well.

 

My first mobile cb radio in the 70’s was a Midland. I think the model number was 13-830 or something like that. It had great receive, very low noise floor. A lot like my president Madison. The top angled down slightly so u can see the meter and channels. They made a black face model, but the one I had was chrome. I’ve been tempted to buy a 5001z and try it in place of this cobra 25 I’m using now. I can’t vouch for the new midlands, but back in the day I think they were as good as the other radios. They had many models to choose from too.

 

I used to run an RCI 2970n2 on 10m all the time. I'd sit in Tampa Fl and talk to guys in Cal all the time using a Wilson 1000 trimmed for 28mhz. The secret to that radio is a service manual alignment and NO mods.

 

I use a Midland 1001z and Cobra 19 DX IV interchangeably. They are both great little compact radios and get the job done equally well. They are especially useful in non-permanent installations that are easy to take in and out and plug into the cigarette lighter port. When used with my magnetic mount antennas, I am up-and-running in a different vehicle within a couple of minutes.
