May's dispatchers are separate from the planning and logistics side, it's that way by design. DM's don't plan loads on drivers at May, with the exception of maybe a night dispatcher putting a load on you that can't be delivered by the original driver on the load, i.e., driver broke down, got sick, ran out of hrs, etc.
First empty, first loaded doesn't always apply either, for obvious reasons. Maybe you have an RDO set and can't run the next load up to Alabama. What if you are on the dry division and a guy on the refer division who just happened to help out on the dry side is available for the next load of frozen corn to FL? You're not going to get it.
The hardest thing for new drivers to overcome is the temptation to believe you are being punished, slighted or whatever you think is contributing to low miles. They don't operate that way. If there is a problem with you, someone will let you know, believe me.
When you are new to this industry, time sitting waiting for a dispatch is magnified. No matter how hard you try, if there is no load available, there is no load available. Logistics doesn't take pleasure in a driver sitting and waiting. If the truck isn't hauling, it's not making any money. You know that, they know that. Everyone has times like this. Some weeks up, some down. However, my experience has been it all evens out to a reasonable average over the long haul. I know these words aren't very comforting to someone who has bills to pay, but I have some experience with all this and can assure you it works out as you move along and adapt to the system of things here as they are.

The problem is may is trying to double their fleet, and they re doing it before they get the freight then again may can't double the freight then have no drivers to do it.basically what scooter said and I like when 11 western guys say 48 guys are stealing their freight I say how many states are in the lower 48 um um yea that's right 48 so we're not taking no freight its part of the 48

Pattyj do you work for May? I have not seen much info about you.
Guys I have been here a year and this week suck by Tuesday I will have only 1800 miles this don't cut it at all. And my truck is 7k miles past service. I will be sending info to weekend dm tomorrow at my terminal. I can't afford 1800 mile weeks when I am going on vacation end of month. -
Logistics plans the trucks, DM just passes it on and makes sure we have what we need to get the job done. Your DM can request a different load if they need you to be somewhere though and tell logistics no. As far as sending in your empty call early, bad idea. If the customer comes out and hands you an OS&D your DM technically can't put you empty until after that is dealt with by OS&D department. So if you sit there for even 15 minutes and there is a problem, your kinda hosed.
