I was a diesel mechanic in the army for 10 yrs. While I was taking my road test my tester said that "most" driver that said they had military train counted driving a chevy van as experience. My road test was a blind side alley dock, side side alley dock then a short road test. Once I was done the tester said I actually had experience. I was put with a trainer for a week then was released solo. My advice would be to set up cones and back back back as often and as much ad you can. Also some state require you to parrell park for your cdl test so practice that also.

All of the Companies I have driven for have accepted my military driving experience. As far as I could tell being prior military moves you to the front of the line anyways.

My driving experience in the military (Air Force) was all flatbed. Since I started Sage while on terminal leave, when we went to get our permits, the DMV guy asked if I had my military license with me. I went and got it out of my car and he looked at it and said instead of a permit, I would walk out with a temperary license. Wyoming waves having to test out of the port if you have tractor trailer on your military license. All I had to wait on was for my hazmat stuff to clear. Walked out on the DMV with a temp license with all endorsements except for school bus and hazmat...the school district tests their drivers, but I did have passenger bus on it.
First company I drove for took my Military experience as good to go. Started water hauling a few days after finishing Sage. -

I don't know how big of truck you want to drive.. But these are normally like 350 ton off road. Pay is normally pretty good . I don't know exactly what your plans are or where you want to be.. But the mines in Nevada are normally looking for employees. Let me know . If interested this is Kinross mines..
Let me know if you aren't interested.. As this takes up so much.. I'll try to delete.Last edited: Nov 14, 2013

A lot of states will let you transfer your military license into a civilian CDL. Check with your state to see what time frame they offer. Like others have said get as much training as possible before you separate.
Because you're a Marine I'll type real slow...thanks for your service. I'm a Gulf 1 vintage ex-zoomie.
