Depends on who you work for with Milk some companies are union which means you as a new guy will work every Saturday from now until kingdom come.
Now from what I've seen milk is hard enough, but like okay Dairymen's the largest dairy producer in the state of Ohio they cover all of Ohio and even venture into Western PA and probably wouldn't be surprised if there in Indiana too. They have guys who have been working there for many years. A woman who I used to see on my Thursday route she's been with Diarymen's for 20 years that what she told me, she's been doing milk deliveries for 20 years.
Some companies you will drag pallets of milk off. Others you will have these big boss cars that you roll the carts hold 80 gallons a piece. Some milk routes are all grocery store, others are 2-wheeler or school stores.
It's like the guy said if they had you the keys to a big 48' tractor trailer your probably on a grocery store route.
However if the paper work says 26ft straight truck that means your not going to be on a grocery store route you'll be you might be
on a school route, or doing C-Stores or both. Dairymen's had routes that were designated to certain trucks. Like all the big sky scrapers, the prisons some school districts those were all done with the box trucks. The box trucks hit some of the C-Stores too. Then they have these like 30'ft trailers that do pretty much the same stuff the box trucks do and then the trucks get bigger from there.
I've been meaning to get more pictures of there fleet I may go out and do that right now so you guys can see what kind of equipment the milk companies run because it's all different kinds.
If you look under the door and the trailers are like this to see there's a side door under that side door is a lift gate that pops out and that's how you unload at C-Stores, Schools some retirement homes on and on and on. Pretty much anything from 26ft straight truck up to 45' trailer will have you doing pretty much anything and every thing. Although the straight trucks don't do to many big grocery stores, but they do other fun things ha-ha. You might get a C-Store route on Saturday that has you making 20 stops usually on Saturday in Lakewood, Ohio there are 2-3 straight trucks just in that town doing all the C-Stores and gas stations. One guy will do Detroit Ave and other guy will do Madison Ave and another guy will do West 117th street area and yeah will all the stops that would be about right probably 3 trucks.
Then they have these trucks, this woman who drives this truck has been around working for Dairymen's she told me for 20 years.
If you get a tractor like that one you might do some grocery stores, but like the smaller or medium type grocery stores, but you'll also do C-Stores and Schools and Old Folks Homes and Ice Cream Shops and Starbucks. The good news is though the straight trucks and the 32' trailers I guess that's the size of that trailer I know it's kind of an odd ball size those trucks are all automatics easy to drive you just hit the D button and they do the rest. I've driven those small Class 7 trucks at the beer company those things turn on a dime so you can get around pretty easy in one of those.AWolf34 Thanks this. -
